Men’s Golf in Third after Round One at Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Despite a lot of rain and then windy conditions, the Marshall men's golf team battled its way to a third place finish after the first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate Saturday, at the Palm Valley Golf Club. Junior Brad Plaziak and redshirt junior Cameron Root are both tied for ninth at 1-under par.
"Weather was crazy today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "Really rainy to start and when the rain stopped it got really windy. The guys played really well today. Bradley Plaziak and Cameron Root shot impressive rounds of one-under par. Tyler Jones played really well and came in at one-over. Ben Roeder, Will Straub and Kyle Mitchell all played solid.
"The team got off to a great start for the spring. We need to keep the momentum heading into tomorrow. We are in the early wave (of teams) tomorrow so we need to get out and start strong."
As a team, Marshall finished one-over par with a 289, just three shots behind Drake for second and five-shots back of the leader Loyola Marymount. The Herd collected 16 total birdies as each member of the team sank at least two during the round. Redshirt junior Will Straub, who is playing as an individual, also sank one birdie and finished the day with a plus-2, 74.
Roberto Nieves of Delaware is atop the leaderboard after scoring a 5-under 67 on Saturday. Nieves holds a one-stroke lead over Evan Brown of Loyola Maryland and Lucas Scherf of Drake.
Marshall will be among the first teams to tee off on day two Sunday morning. Root will get it started for the Herd at 7:45 a.m. local time. Fans can follow along with live scoring from GolfStat.com.
