KENNESAW, Ga. – The Marshall softball team split the day again on Sunday, the final day of the Dr. Bobbie Bailey Memorial Tournament. The Herd defeated the Rhode Island Rams, 8-0, in five innings before falling to Kennesaw State, 5-1.

The Thundering Herd finished the weekend 3-2 and improve to 8-5 overall.

Game One: Marshall 8, Rhode Island 0
Marshall mashed out 14 hits, including five for extra bases, and held the Rams to just one hit in the first game of the day. Junior Aly Harrell drove in four runs for the third time this season. Junior Laney Jones earned her fifth win of the year in the one-hit, shutout. Jones kept the Rhode Island hitters off balance and also received great defensive play behind her.

The Herd started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Mya Stevenson hit a one-out triple to right-center and then scored when junior Saige Pye hit a double down the left field line.

In the bottom of the second, Marshall added three more runs as the bats continued to stay hot. Junior Rachel Rousseau led off the inning with a double to left-center. Sophomore Grace Chelemen then reached on an error that moved Rousseau to third. Senior Blakely Burch scored Rousseau with a sacrifice fly to left-center for the 2-0 lead. Two batters later, with two outs, Harrell smacked a laser over the fence in center for a 2-run home run. It was Harrell's fourth home run of the season and 29th of her career. She is tied for fourth all-time in program history with Rebecca Gamby (2009-12) and Jazmine Valle (2010-13).

The Herd tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Junior Armani Brown led off with a single to center, stole second, and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Harrell drove in Brown with a single to right. Later in the inning, Pye reached on her third hit of the day and sophomore Chloe Lee was sent in to pinch run for Pye at first. Senior Haleigh Christopher then won an 11-pitch battle with a single to left to put two runners on base. Senior Sierra Huerta next hit a double down the left field line that scored both Lee and Christopher.

In the top of the fifth, Rhode Island got the leadoff batter on base with a walk. However, she never moved from first base as Lee made two diving catches in right field and then Chelemen caught the final out of the inning in center.

Harrell drove in her fourth run of the game, that also ended the contest, in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Burch from third.

Harrell finished the game 2-of-3 with a run and the four RBI. Pye was 3-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Stevenson, Huerta and Brown all had two hits each. Every batter in the Marshall lineup reached base safely.

Game Two: Kennesaw State 5, Marshall 1
The story of game two was Marshall struggling to find the timely hit as the Herd collected 10 hits, drew two walks and left 11 runners on base. Kennesaw State had eight hits in the game and left nine on base.

The Owls took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Marshall scored its lone run in the second when Mya Stevenson drove home Grace Chelemen with a single to left.

Again, the Herd received great defensive plays even with two errors in the contest. Sierra Huerta made a few great throws from short to get batters out at first and Chelemen made a full-extension, diving catch in left-center in the bottom of the second. Rachel Rousseau also made an over-the-shoulder catch in left-center while running back toward the fence in the fourth.

Junior Megan Stauffer took the loss in the circle. Freshman Delaney Heaberlin pitched the most with 4.1 innings for Marshall, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs. Junior Laney Jones came in to finish the game for the final 1.2 innings and struck out two.

Stevenson finished the game with two hits and one RBI. Rousseau and Blakely Burch both tallied two hits each as well.

Marshall will return to the road for the fourth-straight week to the Pirate Classic in Norfolk, Va., Feb. 28-March 1. The tournament is co-hosted by Hampton University and Norfolk State. The Herd will take on Delaware State, Hampton, Howard and Norfolk State.
