GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Marshall men's golf team saw a nine-stroke improvement on Monday in the final round of the Loyola Intercollegiate at the Palm Valley Golf Club. The Herd tallied a 4-under team score of 284.
The Thundering Herd finished tied for 11th out of 19 teams.
"Great start for our team this spring," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "They played great today and it was great to see an under par team score. Brad Plaziak really worked hard today to shoot even par and stay at 1-under for the tournament. Ben Roeder played well all day and finished with back-to-back birdies. Tyler Jones shot a very impressive 69 today and was 4-under on his final nine holes. Cameron Root played solid today, he just needed a few more putts to fall. Will Straub played solid all week and I really like how well he is hitting his driver right now. Kyle Mitchell played well this week and was very consistent.
"I really like what I saw this week out of the guys!"
Marshall's team score of 284 was its fourth lowest of the 2019-20 season. Each player sank at least two birdies and, including redshirt junior Will Straub playing as an individual, the Herd combined for 20 total birdies in the final round. Freshman Tyler Jones had the best round of the day for Marshall with a 3-under 69 including a 4-under 32 on the front nine to finish the day, and jumped 25 spots on the leaderboard. Redshirt senior Ben Roeder dropped putts for birdies on holes seven and eight to finish his day with a 2-under 70, and moved up 16 spots on the leaderboard. Junior Brad Plaziak hit a birdie shot on No. 7 to bring his final score down to an even-par, 72.
Drake won the team title with a combined 15-under, 849, just one stroke ahead of Eastern Michigan. The Eagles jumped into second place after an 11-under 277 in the third round.
Roberto Nieves of Delaware took home the individual victory after scoring a 5-under 67 on Monday to finish with an 11-nder 205 for the event. Nieves finished one shot ahead of Evan Brown of Loyola Maryland and Gavin Cohen of Loyola Marymount.
