Tennis Bounces Back with Win over Winthrop

Marshall defeated Winthrop, 4-3, on Friday
HUNTINGTON, W.Va – Marshall women's tennis defeated Winthrop, 4-3, on Friday at the Huntington Tennis Club.

"It was another battle," head coach John Mercer said. "It is good to see all six of them really working hard."

The Herd (8-4) started off early by winning the doubles point. Madi Ballow and Madison Riley defeated Angela Georgieva and Samantha Nanere, 6-3. Followed by Liz Stefancic and Jutte Van Hansewyck beating Alexandra Ferreira da Silva and Tayla Van Eck, 6-3.

Winthrop (1-6) snagged their first point after Ballow fell in two sets in singles. Yet the Herd bounced back with Stefancic and Daniela Dankanych both collecting wins, giving them the 3-1 lead.

Winthrop was hopeful after Alisa Soloveva was victorious over Anna Smith, but the Herd closed out the victory with Hansewyck taking her singles match.

Marshall women's tennis will face Miami (OH) on Sunday, March 1 at 11 a.m. at the Huntington Tennis Center.
