HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Jarrod West and Mikel Beyers each record 20-point games in Marshall men's basketball's (12-13, 6-6 C-USA) 12-point overtime comeback over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (17-7, 8-4 C-USA) at the Cam Henderson Center on Saturday night. The 12-point comeback is the largest of the season by the Herd.
"That was a rollercoaster," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "You have to appreciate how hard they play and how much they care. They're going to give me everything they got. Whenever you do that, it works out. You beat that ball club, we beat them. That puts us up in the standings a little bit. We just got to keep winning."
Leading the way with 25 points was junior Jarrod West, who shot 9-for-15 from the field, including 4-for-7 from three-point range. The guard added a game-high seven assists and three steals to his stat line.
Coming in with 24 points on an 8-for-11 night from field, making 6-of-9 from behind-the-arc, was Mikel Beyers. The redshirt junior forward also brought down six rebounds, rejected a shot and had a steal in the victory.
Sophomore Taevion Kinsey brought up the end of a trio of Marshall student-athletes in double-figure scoring with 19 points. The Columbus, Ohio, native also collected a team-best eight rebounds.
Marshall trailed for the majority of the first 32 minutes of play, including by as many as 12 points in the first half, but never gave up in its battle against the Bulldogs. The Herd found itself in a pickle in the second half trailing by 10 points, 51-41, with 11:50 left in the game.
Across the next 3:51, MU went on a 14-3 run with five points from Beyers, four points from Kinsey and four points from West to regain the lead for the first time since the 12:01 mark in the first half at 55-54 with just under eight minutes left in the contest.
The teams then traded runs until the Bulldogs took a three-point lead, 67-64, with a DaQuan Bracey three to conclude a 5-0 run with 2:52 on the clock. Kinsey nailed a jumper in the paint to cut the deficit to one, 67-66, with 1:22 to play.
Louisiana Tech missed a jumper and the Herd grabbed the rebound, but a Kinsey turnover gave the ball back to the Bulldogs and MU sent Amorie Archibald to the line for LA Tech. Archibald missed the first, but made the second to give the Bulldogs a two-point lead with 22 ticks left.
The Herd brought the ball up the court and West missed a jumper. However, Beyers grabbed the offensive board and nailed a fade-away jumper to tie the game with five seconds left in regulation. The Bulldogs shot attempt to win the game went up after the buzzer the teams went to overtime.
Beyers drilled a three to start overtime and the Herd took it the rest of the way, never trailing, with the game only being tied twice in the extra period.
NOTES
Tonight was Marshall's second halftime comeback this season.
Jannson Williams now has 137 career blocks, tied for sixth in program history with Derrick Wright (1996-00).
Beyers set a new career high with six made three-pointers to go with a career-high 24 points. This was Beyers' first career of 20 or more points.
