Marshall tallies 15 home runs in five games
NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall softball team piled up 14 runs on 13 hits as the Herd completed the weekend sweep with a 14-4 victory over Norfolk State, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Pirate Classic. Marshall added four more home runs to bring its weekend, five-game total to 15.
Â
The Thundering Herd won all five games at the Pirate Classic and improves to 13-5 overall.
Â
Marshall scored first with one run in the first. Sophomore Mya Stevenson drove home junior Aly Harrell with a single to right-center. The offense the struggled in the second and third as the Herd fell behind 4-1.
Â
The offense began clicking again in the top of the fourth. Junior Katie Adams led off with a solo home run to center, the first of her career, and cut the deficit to two. Three batters later with two outs, Marshall began to do some more damage at the plate. Sophomore Grace Chelemen reached with a single to right, followed by Harrell getting on board from an infield error. Back-to-back walks to senior Sierra Huerta and junior Saige Pye first loaded the bases and then brought home Chelemen. Marshall now trailed by one, 4-3.
Â
With bases still loaded, Stevenson came to plate and smacked a towering grand slam to left to give the Herd a 3-run lead, 7-4. It was Stevenson's fourth home run of the weekend, eighth of the season and 28th of her career. Norfolk State made two pitching changes in the inning.
Â
Marshall was shut out in the fifth but blew up again in the sixth scoring seven more runs. Chelemen led off the inning with a triple, her second of the season, and later scored on a passed ball with Harrell at the plate. Harrell reached on a single to right, and then sophomore Rachel Pennington came in to run at first. Pye then belted her fifth home run of the year out to center as Marshall led 10-4.
Â
Another change in the circle brought in the fourth pitcher of the game for the Spartans, but it did not stop the Herd. Stevenson and junior Rachel Rousseau both reached on back-to-back errors at third to put two runners on base. Two batters later, and both runners in scoring position, junior Armani Brown drove in both players with a base hit. Senior Haleigh Christopher put the capper to the weekend with a 2-run home run to center, Marshall's fourth homer of the game.
Â
Freshman Ashley Blessin got the start in the circle and pitched into the third, striking out two and allowing four runs. Junior Megan Stauffer came on in relief and pitched a great game allowing just one hit, only two base runners, and struck out one while earning her first win in a Marshall uniform. The junior right-hander also made two great plays in the infield to get batters out at first. Stauffer retired the final five batters in-a-row to get the win.
Â
Stevenson finished the game with five RBI on two hits and scored twice. Harrell, Brown, Pye and Chelemen all collected two hits each as well. All nine batters for Marshall reached base safely at least once. It was the 12th game this year that the Herd has recorded 10 or more hits.
Â
After spending the first four weeks on the road, Marshall finally returns to Dot Hicks Field for six total games in the coming week. The Herd takes on the Akron Zips in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 3, with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Marshall then hosts the Thundering Herd Round Robin, March 6-8, with Rutgers and Bucknell making the trip to Huntington.
