HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall softball team made its home debut with some added thunder as the Herd took both games from the Akron Zips, 8-3 and 8-0, Wednesday at Dot Hicks Field. Marshall added five more home runs to bring its season total up to 37, in just 20 games.

The Thundering Herd improved to 15-5 and have now won seven-straight. Akron falls to 6-15.

Game One: Marshall 8, Akron 3
Marshall started the day with three home runs in the game one victory. Senior Haleigh Christopher got the party started with a two-run shot in the bottom of the second. Christopher came to the plate after junior Katie Adams hit her first of two doubles in the game. The Herd led 2-0.

The Zips cut the Marshall lead in half with a solo home run in the top of the third.

Marshall scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth to build the lead back to two, 3-1. Adams hit her second double of the game to right-center. Sophomore Caitlin Myers came in to run at second and later scored on a single to center from sophomore Grace Chelemen.

In the bottom of the fifth, junior Mya Stevenson crushed her ninth home run of the year with a towering shot that almost landed on the roof of the old ACF building beyond the left-field fence and the railroad tracks. Still in the fifth, Marshall added two more runs as Chelemen brought home junior Rachel Rousseau and Adams – who was intentionally walked after hitting two doubles – bringing the Herd lead up to five, 6-1.

Akron scored two runs in the top of the sixth, however a great defensive play for the final out ended the rally.

In the bottom of the sixth, junior Sierra Huerta clobbered her eighth home run of the year with a solo shot to left. Next, Stevenson was walked and then scored on a triple from junior Saige Pye, her first of the season.

Junior Laney Jones got the start in the circle, went the distance and ended the game with her seventh strikeout. Jones moves her record up to 8-1.

Marshall tallied nine hits and every player in the lineup reached base safely at least once. Adams and Chelemen each had two hits and Chelemen drove in a career-high three runs.

Game Two: Marshall 8, Akron 0 (5 innings)
Marshall continued the home run party right from the start as junior Aly Harrell led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to left-center, her fifth of the season and 30th of her career. Harrell becomes the fourth player in program history with 30 career home runs joining Rachel Folden (58 from 2005-08), Shaelynn Braxton (35 from 2013-17) and Samantha Rodriguez (32 from 2005-08).

It took the Herd offense until the third to add more runs with two. Saige Pye ripped a double and then scored on a single to right from Rachel Rousseau. Two batters later, Haleigh Christopher plated Rousseau to give the Herd the 3-0 lead.

Marshall took advantage of some free passes in the fourth that led to another homer. Harrell began the inning with a hit-by-pitch, her sixth of the season, and then two batters later Stevenson was walked. With two outs, Rousseau smacked a towering shot to center for a three-run home run that put the Herd up 6-0. It was the 11th game of the season for Marshall with at least two homers.

The Herd ended the game in the fifth, again taking advantage of free passes. Grace Chelemen led off with a walk and then junior Armani Brown dropped a single in left-center. Harrell drove in Chelemen with a single to right and the Herd had two on base with nobody out. Sierra Huerta stepped up and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stevenson returned to the plate and drew a walk that brought home Brown and ended the game, 8-0.

Freshman Ashley Blessin received the start in the circle and had a great game, allowing just four base runners, and earning her fifth win as well as second shutout of the season. There were just two Akron hits and Blessin struck out four.

The Herd tallied nine hits as again all nine batters reached base safely at least once. Harrell, Rousseau and Brown recorded two hits each. Rousseau drove in four runs and scored twice.

Marshall returns to Dot Hicks Field this Friday through Sunday, March 6-8, to host the Thundering Herd Round Robin. Rutgers and Bucknell make the trip to Huntington. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday as Marshall plays Rutgers.
