PINEHURST, N.C. – The Marshall men's golf team finished the first round at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, Friday afternoon at Pinehurst No. 8. Redshirt senior Ben Roeder is tied for ninth overall.

The Thundering Herd is sixth out of 13 teams, and just two shots back from the top five.

"We played some really good golf today," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "The course was really wet and we started with rain showers and as the day progressed the winds picked up to 35 mph. Ben Roeder had a great round and is hitting the ball extremely well. Brad Plaziak is really playing some great golf right now and carried his good play from Arizona to here at Pinehurst.

"Tyler Jones finished incredibly strong to help our team score, he played the last four holes even par in the worst conditions of the day. Cameron Root played solid and I think he will get hot and get some birdies to fall over the next couple of days. Will Straub hit some good shots today and should really improve as the week goes on. Cole Moore really played pretty steady today and I like where is game is right now.

"Matt Hoffman did a lot of good things today and I expect more of the same the next couple of days. Kyle Mitchell really found his ball striking on the back-nine and it was fun to watch him hit some quality shots. Christian Boyd played his first round for the Herd today and I really like what I saw and he has a bright future here.

"Tomorrow's forecast looks a little better and I am looking for the Herd to go low tomorrow!"

Roeder had a great start to the day collecting three birdies on the front-nine. He finished the day with a 3-over 74, and is three shots back off the lead. Junior Brad Plaziak is tied for 24th and freshman Tyler Jones is tied for 27th.

Elon leads after the first day with a 7-stroke advantage over Radford. Graham Hutchinson and Max Ferrari of Elon are tied atop the leaderboard after scoring an even-par, 71.

Round two begins with first tee times at 8 a.m. Marshall will begin on the back-nine on Saturday.
