Men’s Golf Receives GCAA President’s Special Recognition and All-America Scholar Honors

Roeder, Moore, Root, Plaziak and Mitchell named All-America Scholars

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's golf team received several prestigious academic honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Thundering Herd earned the President's Special Recognition Honors for a team grade point average of 3.5 or above and five players were named All-America Scholars.
 
Redshirt senior Ben Roeder, senior Cole Moore, redshirt junior Cameron Root, junior Brad Plaziak, and sophomore Kyle Mitchell received the individual honors.
 
To be eligible for the Golf All-America Scholar award, an individual must be at least a sophomore. In Division I, the player must have a stroke-average under 76.0, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and for just 2019-20 have competed in 40 percent of the team's competitive rounds.
 
For the team award, a total of 250 schools were named All-Academic Teams with a GPA of 3.0 or better across all divisions, and 95 schools earned the President's Special Recognition. 56 schools came from Division I. Marshall along with Rice were the only programs from Conference USA on the President's Special Recognition list.
 
Roeder is a five-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, received the 2016 Academic Medal, and earned his first All-America Scholar award. The Midland, Mich., native played in all seven events this season and averaged 75.48 strokes per round. Roeder scored a career-best, 3-under 68 in the final round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
 
Moore is a four-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor roll, a three-time recipient of the Academic Medal and his second All-America Scholar award. The Spencer, W.Va., native competed in four events this past season and averaged 75.67 strokes per round. Moore scored a season-best 71 in the first and third rounds of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
 
Root is a four-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and earned his first All-America Scholar honor. The Columbus, Ohio native played in five events this past season and averaged 74.80 strokes per round. Root scored a career-best, 4-under 67 in the second round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
 
Plaziak is a three-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, a recipient of the Academic Medal in 2019, and earned his first All-America Scholar honor. The Atlanta, Ga., native competed in six events in 2019-20 and averaged 75.83 strokes per round. Plaziak was the top finisher for the Herd at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and the Loyola Intercollegiate.
 
Mitchell is a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and earned his first All-America Scholar award. The Powell, Ohio native was one of three players for the Herd to compete in all seven events in 2019-20. Mitchell finished with a 75.90 stroke average. He was the top finisher for Marshall at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
