Duo among the best in the Group of 5
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall running back Brenden Knox and offensive lineman Cain Madden have been named to College Football America Yearbook's Group of 5 starting lineup, the outlet announced Thursday. The honor is CFA's version of a Group of 5 conferences All-America team.
Memphis and Appalachian State were the only other schools to have multiple honorees.
Knox was named the 2019 Conference USA MVP, the Thundering Herd's team and offensive MVP and collected first-team all-league honors following a season that saw him amass a league-high 1,387 yards and 11 touchdowns on 270 carries (also tops in Conference USA). He also caught 14 passes for 129 yards. His rushing yardage total also ranked third nationally among sophomores. Based on 2019 statistics, Knox will enter the 2020 season as the sixth-leading rusher in college football behind the likes of Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard and Clemson's Travis Etienne. At 1,965 career rushing yards through two seasons, he ranks as the third-best two-season start to a career through a sophomore season for Marshall running backs behind Chris Parker and Doug Chapman.
Madden was a breakout player on the offensive side of the ball for the Thundering Herd in 2019. He was named to C-USA's second team after starting in all 13 games for Marshall. He was a key cog in a unit that paved the way for a running game that finished second in Conference USA in rushing yards and rushing yards per game. At season's end, he was honored with the team's Offensive Gridiron Gladiator Award, recognition given by the coaching staff to the player who is relentless and gives everything all of the time.
The duo was named to the first team on Athlon's preseason All-Conference USA team in June.
