Dear Thundering Herd fans:
The 2020 Marshall football season is here, but the journey to this incredible moment was not an easy one.
I would remiss if I didn't attempt to shine a spotlight on every single person who helped get us here. We needed everyone. We needed the knowledge and insight of our doctors, medical experts, trainers and coronavirus task force. We needed the steady hand of leadership from our coaches, administrators, support staff and upperclassman student-athletes. We needed the support from our university president, Dr. Jerome "Jerry" Gilbert and his staff. We needed the dedication and discipline of every student-athlete, in all sports, to make the correct decisions around and away from their respective programs.
We needed – and will continue to need – you, our loyal and passionate fan base. Every one of you helped get us here.
The hours and days have been long and tiring. The situation around collegiate athletics has been fluid and filled with uncertainty. What we thought we had come to know and expect one day would change on a moment's notice. It has taken a great amount of patience and adaptability to handle the adversity of what 2020 has presented collegiate athletic department across the country. Now, we feel so fortunate and grateful to be playing college football this season.
We have nine games – six at Joan C. Edwards Stadium and three on the road. It was a priority for us to create a safe plan for fans to be inside our stadium this fall. This football program belongs to the Herd family, and on the special 50th anniversary season of the Southern Airways Flight 932 tragedy, we couldn't imagine playing games without you.
So, here we are. It's game week and there will be a national audience watching our football program on ESPN this Saturday. We have a special team for a special season, and I am thankful our fans can follow us in person or on national television.
We are thankful for you and your continued support.
Go Herd!
Director of Athletics
