Marshall Men’s Basketball Sweeps FIU Road Trip

MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (9-4, 3-3 C-USA) swept its road trip at FIU (8-8, 2-6 C-USA) with an 89-72 victory in Miami at Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
"The more people you have playing to their potential, the better the team will be," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said on the effort of his bench in the win.
 
Junior guard Taevion Kinsey recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the victory. Redshirt sophomore guard Andrew Taylor added a season-high 20 points, while bring down six rebounds. Taylor made nine of his 13 attempts from the field.
 
Freshman guard David Early collected a season-high 14 points, making 3-of-5 from the field, including both of his threes and free-throw attempts. Senior forward Darius George made up a quartet of Herd student-athletes with 10 or more points with 10, adding two blocks to his stat line.
 
Marshall started contest by jumping out to an early 4-2 lead in the first minute, making its first two attempts from the field. The two sides continued to trade baskets as after a Kinsey free-throw, the Herd lead 15-14 eight minutes into the ballgame.
 
FIU then used a 10-0 run, including eight points from Javaunte Hawkins, to take a 24-15 advantage with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.
 
MU dominated the rest of the half. George and Kinsey combined for a quick 5-0 run, followed by another 10-0 Herd run with Early scoring eight consecutive points.
 
Marshall concluded the half on a 6-0 run, capped by a Jannson Williams three, to take a 43-36 advantage into the break. The Green and White scored 28 of the final 40 points in the half.
 
The two programs traded baskets for the for the first four minutes of the second half as MU had a 10-point lead at 53-43. FIU slowly chipped away at the Marshall lead and went on a 19-9 scoring run to tie the game, 62-62, with 9:39 left in the game.
 
Despite the Panthers tying the game, they wouldn't see the lead in the final nine minutes as the Marshall defense limited FIU to just 10 points from the time they tied the contest.
 
The Herd had four different runs of four or more points, including runs of 9-0 and 7-0, in the final nine minutes. Kinsey scored the Herd's final four points of the game, extending the team's lead to its highest of the game at 20 points, 89-69, with 43 seconds to go.
 
NOTES
D'Antoni recorded his 122nd win at Marshall.
 
Jarrod West had a pair of steals in the win and is tied with UAB's Cardell Johnson at 237 career takeaways for third most in Conference USA history.
 
Kinsey scored 20 or more points for the seventh time this season, as Taylor reached the 20-point plateau for the first time this season and third time in his career.
 
Kinsey's double-double was his second of the season with both coming in the last three games. He now has six double-doubles for his career.
 
Early's 14 points marked the first-time in his career to record 10 or more.
 
George has had 10 or more points in back-to-back games.
 
The Herd's 26 bench points are tied for the second most scored this season.
 
MU's six turnovers are its fewest in a game this season.
