HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – On a cool Saturday night at Hoops Family Field, the 3rd-ranked Marshall men's soccer team needed some extra time to get a 1-0, double overtime victory over the UAB Blazers. Graduate student Pedro Dolabella scored the golden goal in the 106th minute.
The Herd set a new team record with its sixth-straight clean sheet. The Marshall defense also increased its program record of now 643 minutes and 58 seconds since it last conceded a goal.
The Thundering Herd improved to 8-1-3 overall and 3-0-2 in Conference USA. The Blazers fall to 2-9-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league play.
"There was a little bit of frustration creeping into the team, I think, but all credit to our guys they shook it off," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "They were able to come back together, and remember who they were, and remember why they love doing this, and that they love doing it together.
"It looks like some teams now are coming in here and looking to try and get away with a tie. They are not committing any numbers forward. Some of these games that we have had at home, the teams are just kind of sitting in and not looking for too much on the counter attack. It seems to be a strategy that we're going to face and we just to get used to it and deal with it. And that is one of the great things about overtime. It gives you an extra 20 minutes to find that goal that you haven't been able to find in regulation. So for us, for a dominant team, a top team, overtime is great."
The Blazers were content to keep the defense back to try and shut down Marshall's attack. The Herd owned time of possession, 79-percent to 21-percent. Marshall also held the Blazers without a single shot all night. The Herd totaled 27 shots in the match with eight on goal.
From the beginning, UAB sat back with its defense attempting to stifle Marshall's playmakers. However, the Herd still came through with eight total shots in the first half and two on target. The first shot on goal came in the sixth minute as redshirt junior Milo Yosef attempted to score and it was stopped by UAB goalkeeper Seth Torman. Senior Vitor Dias had a chance in the in the 26th minute and was also stopped by Torman. Marshall had three-straight shot attempts blocked by Blazer defenders inside the box to help keep the match scoreless.
In the second half Marshall kept its foot on the gas despite not being able to break through for the score. The Herd fired 11 more shots with three on goal. The first shot on target in the second half came from junior Max Schneider in the 72nd minute off a free kick that Torman was able to nab just under the crossbar. Dolabella had a chance in the 73rd minute that was knocked away from the goal by a UAB defender. Senior Ibrahima Diop took a shot on a breakaway that Torman was able to make the save, his fifth of the night. By the end of regulation, Marshall had outshot UAB 19-0.
The physical match carried on to extra time. The two teams combined for 24 total fouls and eight yellow cards with each team collecting four cautions.
The Herd fired six more shots with two on goal in the first overtime period. In the 98th minute, Yosef sent in a shot that was stopped by Torman. Less than a minute later, Dias took a shot that was also saved. Yosef blasted one last attempt with less than 10 seconds on the clock that went wide right, sending the match into the second overtime.
Marshall needed just two shot attempts in the second overtime period as Schneider just missed high in the 105th minute on the first one. Finally, after some great ball movement, Yosef blasted a pass into the box that Dolabella headed in for the golden goal.
"Honestly the first feeling is always relief," Dolabella said talking about finally scoring to win the match. "Because we really needed these three points (in the C-USA standings). The first goal always is to win the regular season, and if we didn't win tonight that makes it even tougher. So relief but also happy that we got the job done. It took a little longer but we got the three points."
With the goal, Dolabella set a personal-best with his eighth score of the season. It was also the 21st of his career. Dolabella has scored a goal in each of the last four matches and has netted at least one point in 10 of Marshall's 12 contests.
Yosef recorded his fourth assist of the season, tying his career-high from this past year, and the 11th of his career. Yosef now has 47 career total points which moves him into sole possession of 11th place in program history, surpassing Mike Glasgow (1990-94).
The clean sheet was also the sixth of the year for Herd keeper Oliver Semmle despite not facing a single shot the entire night. Semmle however was instrumental in teaming up with center backs Nathan Dossantos and Collin Mocyunas to keep moving the ball around to maintain possession and working to find the hole to break through the UAB defense. Semmle now has 17 career clean sheets. He is second all-time behind Daniel Withrow (2009-12) who leads with 21.5.
The Herd gets right back into action on Tuesday, Oct. 19, as the Wright State Raiders come to Huntington for a non-conference match. After the match against the Raiders, Marshall will have three contests remaining in the regular season and all in conference play at Charlotte (Oct. 23), home versus South Carolina for Senior Day (Oct. 30) and finally at No. 18 FIU (Nov. 5).
