HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team battled through another five-set match (25-21, 25-13, 17-25, 23-25, 15-8) against the Old Dominion Monarchs, grabbing the victory on Saturday in the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd improved to 8-13 overall and 4-4 in Conference USA action. The Monarchs fell to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

It was Alumni Weekend for the Herd as members of the 1971 team were in attendance to celebrate their 50th anniversary, as well as other former Marshall players who were there to cheer on their alma mater. Marshall also honored former player Katie Potts (2011-12) with a moment of silence before the match on Friday, and several of Potts' family members and alumni were wearing green shirts with Potts and No. 14 on the back.

"I am so proud of the bounce back our entire team showed today," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "Offensively we were able to lean on Ciara (DeBell) through the whole match as well as through her serve receive. Being able to be terminal from every position is what led us to this win. Essence (Clerkley), Lydia (Montague), Olivia (Fogo) in the fifth were huge for Sydney (Lostumo) to be able to spread the ball. Anna (Calcagno) stepped up big time when it mattered and I'm so proud of her. Sydney's serving run in the fifth gave us everything we needed to sail through that set."

Graduate student Ciara DeBell had a busy day on the court with her 10th double-double of the season recording 18 kills and 22 digs. She was one dig shy of tying her career-high of 23 set against IUPUI on Sept. 15, 2018. DeBell was a perfect 48-of-48 on receptions giving her a weekend total of 101-of-103 on receptions good for a .981 percentage. The Ocala, Fla., native added three assists, two aces and one block to round out her day. DeBell is nearing another great career milestone as she now has 972 digs in her collegiate career and has a chance to become a 1,000-1,000 player in both kills and digs.

Senior Macy McElhaney tallied her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. She added two assists, one ace and one block as well. Junior Lydia Montague came through with 11 kills and hit at a .389 clip. Sophomore Anna Calcagno tallied nine kills. Junior Essence Clerkley finished with eight kills and hit .444. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo played in the last two sets and finished with four kills and a .333 attack percentage, providing a spark for the Herd late.

Graduate student Sydney Lostumo, who was honored before the match for her two career milestones this year of 2,000 career assists and 100 career aces, put up over 50 assists (52) for the second-straight match and the fourth time this season. Lostumo finished the series against Old Dominion with 106 total assists. She now has 2,164 in her career and 1,772 in her time at Marshall, good for ninth all-time. The Gilbert, Ariz., native recorded her 10th double-double of the year adding 15 digs. Lostumo tied her season-high with five service aces including four during a massive run at the beginning of the fifth set.

Senior libero Sarah Schank, who was also honored pregame for her career milestone of 1,000 digs, recorded 20 digs and was a perfect 25-for-25 on receptions. Schank moved ahead of Ashley Barnard (2000-03) for 12th all-time in team history with now 1,104 career digs. Schank added one assist and one ace.

Sophomore Riley Winslow finished the match with four digs and one assist.

At the net, Marshall totaled eight more team blocks. Montague led the way with six. Calcagno was next with three. Fogo came through with two blocks while Clerkley, Lostumo, McElhaney and DeBell had one block each.

Saturday's match did not feature nearly as many ties and lead changes as Friday's contest, with 15 ties and eight lead changes. Still, it was another great battle for the fans to watch.

Marshall dominated most of its way through the first set as there was just one tie and one lead change. The Monarchs scored the first point before a kill by DeBell and then a block from Calcagno and Montague gave the Herd the lead through the rest of the frame. Old Dominion called its first timeout as Marshall jumped out to a 4-1 lead, and then its second timeout with the Herd up 9-3. The Monarchs showed fight, cutting its deficit to three at 23-20 and again at 24-21. A kill from McElhaney, her fourth of the set, ended the first and gave Marshall a 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead. The Herd hit .333 in the first set. Lostumo put up 13 assists and Schank had seven digs.

Marshall led from beginning to end in the second set, dominating the frame for the 25-13 win. The Herd started with a 4-0 run and then used a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead, 13-4. During the 7-0 run, Marshall had four-straight kills, including two from Clerkley, before three-straight attack errors from the Monarchs led to a timeout. The Herd had two other runs of 4-0 and 3-0 in the set to help stay way out in front. A kill from DeBell, her fifth in the set as she also hit .444 in the second, ended the period and gave Marshall a 2-0 lead and the chance for a sweep. DeBell had five digs in the second set and already reached double-figures after recording six in the first set. The Herd hit .412 as a team while Old Dominion finished with a .121 attack percentage.

The Monarchs refused to quit as the third set featured seven ties and four lead changes. Old Dominion stayed alive using a 6-0 run to take the lead for good at 17-11. Another 4-0 run helped to give the Monarchs a comfortable lead and eventually a 25-17 win to force the match to a fourth set.

It was another back-and-forth battle in the fourth set with five ties and two lead changes. Marshall led by as much as five at 11-6 before Old Dominion came storming back. The Monarchs took the lead at 20-19 and held on through the remainder despite the Herd keeping it close. DeBell had another five kills in the fourth as well as seven digs. Fogo, playing in her first set of the day, tallied two kills and two blocks.

The beginning of the fifth set looked similar to the start of the fifth set on Friday with the score tied at 1-1, and then Old Dominion taking the lead at 3-1. However, after a kill from DeBell gave Marshall the serve down by one, the Herd rolled out an 8-0 run to take a commanding lead. Lostumo tallied four aces in the run including two-straight that led to a Monarch timeout. A kill from Montague was the last point of the run as Marshall now led 10-3. The teams then traded points back and forth as the Herd was able to keep responding after Old Dominion scored one or two points, not allowing the Monarchs the chance to put on a run and get back into the contest. Marshall scored the final two points as Fogo buried a shot to move it to match-point and then McElhaney finished the day with her 11th kill.

The Herd hit .429 in the fifth set with nine kills and no errors in 21 attempts.

Marshall heads back out on the road for two contests at Charlotte, Oct. 22-23. The Herd ends the regular season back in the Cam Henderson Center for Senior Weekend against the FIU Panthers, Nov. 5-6.
