Defense Shines as Herd Sweeps Owls

Clerkley leads Marshall with career-high nine blocks

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Marshall volleyball team showcased its defense in a sweep (25-21, 25-18, 25-13) of the Florida Atlantic Owls on Friday. The Herd tallied a total of 14 blocks, averaging 4.67 per set.
The Thundering Herd improved to 6-12 overall and 2-3 in Conference USA play. The Owls dropped to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in league action. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. Live Stats will be provided, and the match will be streamed on CUSAtv.
"This was a great team road win against a tough FAU team," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We were able to lean on some different pieces today with Essence (Clerkley) defensively and Brynn Brown offensively. I'm proud of the grit and bounce back we showed. We have a lot of adjustments to make to get back at it tomorrow."
Junior Essence Clerkley and senior Zoie Holley shined in the middle at the net for the Herd. The two combined for 13 blocks as Clerkley set a career-high with nine and Holley tied her career-best with four. Sophomore Anna Calcagno set a career-high as well with five blocks defending the outside. Senior Macy McElhaney contributed four blocks as did freshman Brynn Brown for a career-high. Graduate student Ciara DeBell added one block.
Marshall's defense forced 30 Florida Atlantic attack errors as the Owls finished with a team attack percentage of .068, FAU's second-lowest percentage of the season. Florida Atlantic also had six service errors and five ball-handling errors.
Three players led the way on offense with six kills each in DeBell, McElhaney and Brown who set another career-high for herself. Brown finished with a .545 attack percentage (six kills, no errors, 11 attacks). Clerkley had five kills while Calcagno had four and Holley added three.
Graduate student Sydney Lostumo tallied 17 assists to lead the team and had two service aces. DeBell was second on the team in assists with a career-best five. Brown added four helpers.
Senior libero Sarah Schank led the Herd with 14 digs, was 13-for-13 on receptions and had two aces. Junior Meagan Camden had eight digs and one assist. McElhaney and DeBell had seven digs each and combined to go a perfect 29-for-29 on receptions.
The first set had three ties and two lead changes, all of which came early. The Owls briefly held the lead at 4-3 until a kill from McElhaney, her third of the set, tied the score at 4-4 and then an Owls attack error gave Marshall back the lead at 5-4. The Herd stayed in control throughout the rest of the set as the defense was firing right from the start. Marshall had five total team blocks in the first set and forced 12 Florida Atlantic attack errors. Calcagno and Clerkley had three blocks each in the first. The Herd took the set, 25-21, on the final Owls attack error.
With Marshall leading 1-0, Florida Atlantic began to battle back in a second set that featured eight ties and three lead changes. The Owls held a slim lead to start, until the first lead change, when a kill from Calcagno put Marshall in front 3-2. That was short-lived as Florida Atlantic took the lead back. The set went back-and-forth as the Owls never led by more than two points. A Florida Atlantic ball-handling error tied the set at 9-9 and then another error gave Marshall the lead again, this time for good. A 4-0 run by the Herd that featured back-to-back kills from Brown gave Marshall a 7-point advantage, 21-14. The Herd reached set-point on a block from McElhaney and Holley, 24-17, before a point by the Owls gave the home team the ball back and a chance to try and come back trailing by six, 24-18. However, a service error from Florida Atlantic, its third of the set, gave Marshall the win and the 2-0 lead.
The Herd led from beginning to end in the third set. Marshall scored the first three points, featuring back-to-back aces from Lostumo. Later, a block from Clerkley and McElhaney led to an Owls timeout with the Herd leading 7-2. Florida Atlantic was able to fight back, bringing its deficit down to three at 11-8. Marshall then went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Schank ace to lead 18-10. The Herd finished the set and the day, outscoring Florida Atlantic 7-3 for the win and the sweep. Clerkley and Brown combined on the block for the final point. Clerkley tallied four blocks in the final frame.
Marshall had six more blocks in the third set and held the Owls to a .000 hitting percentage as Florida Atlantic had 10 kills with 10 errors on 36 attempts. On the other side, the Herd hit .320 in the third set for its best percentage of the day. Marshall had 10 kills and just two errors in 25 attempts. Schank had seven of her 14 digs in the third set.
