Will join Herd in the fall of 2022
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall volleyball head coach Ari Aganus announced the signing of two players for the incoming freshman class of 2022 on Wednesday.
The new additions to the Herd Family are Bella Thompson and Bianca Giglio.
Thompson is a setter from Mooresville, N.C. She has been starring for Carolina Union Volleyball Club. She has worked with USA Volleyball High Performance A2 in 2019. Thompson was named to the Ultra Ankle JVA Phenom Watchlist in 2019 through 2021 as well as the 2020 AVCA Phenom Watchlist. While playing with her club team, Thompson has been a three-time team captain. She attends South Iredell High School but does not play volleyball there. Off the court she has been heavily involved at her high school as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, National Honors Society, Beta Club, National English Honors Society, Crosby Scholars, Save Club, Recycling Club and Leadership Council at CUVC.
"I chose Marshall because I wanted to major in computer science and this was one of the few schools that offered multiple differentiated degrees," Thompson said of signing with the Herd. "Also, it genuinely seemed like a home and had a culture that I wanted to be a part of."
"Bella is an elite setter with an IQ that many can only dream of," coach Aganus said. "She understands the game from a competitive mentality and is also able to sling the ball physically from any section of the court. The heights and levels I believe Bella will go to here are really exciting to be part of. On and off the court Bella is a leader and will set a new standard in our gym very early on."
Giglio hails from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and has experience at several different positions. The Herd will look at her at libero and defensive specialist, positions she has played. She has been starring for Notre Dame Preparatory High School. Giglio has been a member of four district championships, three regional titles, two-time state quarterfinalist and the state runner-up in 2018. She is a two-time AVCA All-Region selection, garnered AVCA Best and Brightest Award and was just honored as a 2021 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention. Giglio was named to the 2020 All-County Dream Team and was a Third Team All-State selection. She has also been named to the Prep Dig Watchlist list three times as well as a Prep Dig "Top 5 Right Side Hitters," Prep Dig "Top Middle," and the Prep Dig Frosh 59 lists.
"I chose Marshall because it has a wonderful academic and athletics program," Giglio said of signing with the Herd. "Marshall also has a wonderful and loving community like no other."
"Bianca is the type of player we, as coaches, will be lucky to have in our gym," coach Aganus said. "She pursues every ball, gives maximum effort, and plays at a high level of consistently. I am so excited to add her to our family and cannot wait to get started and see what is in store for her career here at Marshall."
