HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team fought hard but ultimately fell in four sets to the FIU Panthers on Saturday (19-24, 25-13, 22-25, 22-25).

The season ended for the Herd in the Cam Henderson Center. The Thundering Herd finished 9-16 overall and 5-7 in Conference USA. The Panthers improve to 9-12 overall and 6-6 in league play. FIU has punched its ticket to the C-USA Tournament.

"Honestly, this has been one of the most challenging but enjoyable season's I've ever been a part of," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We have five amazing seniors who have been an integral part of the culture and program growth I have been aiming to create since my arrival. This program owes them more than we will be able to ever give them, and we are forever grateful for their endless effort and commitment to the program and to Marshall University.

"Regardless of the result, this team is not defined by our statistics, but by our character. I am so proud of our entire team and cannot wait to see what's in store for us in the future."

Marshall honored its five seniors prior to the match. Sydney Lostumo, Zoie Holley, Sarah Schank, Destiny Leon and Ciara DeBell all made a major impact on the program and leave a lasting legacy as some of the best players in team history.

DeBell led the Herd in her final collegiate match with a season-high 21 kills. She added 13 digs for her 13th double-double of the season and the 40th of her career. The Ocala, Fla., native tallied double-digit kills for the 19th time this season and 80th time in her career. For the season, DeBell led the Herd with 344 kills, was second in digs with 295 and 47 total blocks. DeBell finishes her Herd career second all-time in kills per set with 3.86 and total attacks with 4,134, trailing only four-time All-American and Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Kelly-Anne Billingy (2004-07). She is third all-time in kills with 1,404. In her entire collegiate career, including two years at Florida Gulf Coast, DeBell tallied 1,490 kills, 4,359 attacks, 1,027 digs, 210 blocks, 71 aces, 58 assists, 1,687 points while playing in 411 sets over 120 matches.

Leon ended the day with six total blocks and six kills. It was the 17th time this season that she recorded at least three blocks and 50th of her career. She finished the season with 105 blocks and averaged 1.19 per set. Leon becomes the first player in program history since 1987 to average more than 1.00 block per set in a season three times. The Arouca, Trinidad native recorded at least one block over the final 63-straight matches in her career, going all the way back to the 2019 season-opener. She finishes her time with the Herd fifth in block assists with 246, and seventh in total blocks with 309 and solo blocks with 63. Her .294 career attack percentage is good for sixth all-time.

Schank recorded 23 digs on Saturday, the 23rd time in her career with 20 or more. She added five assists and two aces as well. Schank tallied 473 digs for the year, good for 10th-best all-time in a single season at Marshall, and averaged 4.59 digs per set, tied for fourth highest in Herd annals. In her career, Schank finishes her time with the Green & White 11th in career digs with 1,175 and sixth in digs per set with 3.44. The Naperville, Ill., native was the only one of the Herd's five seniors who came to Huntington as a freshman. The others all transferred from other institutions. Schank played in 342 sets over 93 matches, recorded 326 kills, 159 assists, and 76 aces.

Lostumo led the team with 25 assists as part of a two-setter rotation that the Herd used against FIU. She added 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the year, a career best. It was her 54th career match with 20 or more assists and 22nd of the season. Lostumo ended the season with a career-high 868 assists and averaged 8.43 assists per set. The Gilbert, Ariz., native finishes her time with the Green & White third in career aces per set with 0.38, sixth in assists with 1,913 and eighth in assists per match with 7.71. Over her entire collegiate career, including two seasons at Fresno State, Lostumo recorded 2,305 assists, 562 digs, 116 aces, 83 kills and 46 total blocks.

Holley did not play in the match, but was very effective this season when she did come on the floor. She played in four matches with 13 total sets, and filled in very well when Leon had to miss some time. Holley recorded at least three blocks in all four matches including a career-high four in three of the contests. She put up four blocks each in both sweeps at Florida Atlantic. She transferred to Marshall before the 2019 season after spending one year at Embry-Riddle in Daytona, Fla. The Pickerington, Ohio native finished her final collegiate season with 15 total blocks, averaging 1.15 blocks per set.

Junior Lydia Montague was second on the Herd in kills with eight in the loss. Junior Essence Clerkley finished with six while senior Macy McElhaney, who will be returning next season, tallied five. McElhaney finished second on the team in kills for the season with 187, an average of 2.15 per set. Freshman Brynn Brown recorded 15 assists and finished the season with 110. Junior Megan Taylor played in the last two sets and tallied two digs, both on diving efforts.

The Herd recorded 16 team blocks in the loss. Montague led the way with nine as she finished her first season in Huntington second in blocks with 95 and averaged 1.10 per set. Clerkley tied Leon for second-most in the match with six. Clerkley ended her first year at Marshall third in blocks with 63 and averaged 0.91 per set. Both Montague and Clerkley have two more years of eligibility remaining, due to the COVID season of 2020-21. DeBell tallied four blocks with McElhaney and sophomore Anna Calcagno recording two each. McElhaney finished the year with 61 total blocks, a career-best, and Calcagno tallied a career-high 31.

The first set featured seven ties but just one lead change as FIU took a 1-0 lead in the match. The Panthers took the lead at 12-11, however the Herd managed to keep it close until the end. FIU used a 5-0 run to end the set. DeBell had five kills in the first while Schank recorded eight digs. Leon and DeBell teamed up for three blocks each.

Marshall led the second set from beginning to end with a dominant performance. The Herd had a 6-0 run to take an eight-point lead at 16-8, capped by a solo block from Montague. FIU closed to within five, 18-13, and then Marshall took off on a 7-0 run to end the set and tie the match at 1-1. The final run began with a Panther attack error and then featured two kills from DeBell and one from Leon. A block assist from Clerkley and Leon moved it to set-point, 24-13. The final point was an ace from Schank. DeBell and Montague combined for seven kills. The Herd's defense totaled five blocks and forced nine attack errors from FIU as the Panthers hit minus-.053 in the period. Schank tallied seven more digs in the second while DeBell had six.

The third set had three ties and one lead change. FIU took the lead at 7-6 and did not look back. Marshall put up a fight at the end after the Panthers moved to set-point at 24-18. The Herd scored the next four points to close within two. Clerkley had a pair of kills to close the gap. FIU finally ended the set on the next point for the 25-22 win and the 2-1 lead. Lostumo and Brown combined for 13 assists in the period.

FIU led the fourth set from beginning to end, however Marshall was able to keep in close and showed its heart, grit and fight as the end came near. The Panthers led by six at 23-17 before the Herd put together one last valiant effort to try and save the season. An attack error gave Marshall the serve trailing by five. Another FIU attack error cut the Herd deficit to four, 23-19. DeBell then crushed a shot to close the gap to three points. A third Panther attack error and another kill from DeBell brought Marshall to within one at 23-22. However, FIU was able to score the last two points to get the win. DeBell finished the fourth set with eight kills and hit at a .316 clip. Montague tallied four blocks and Schank had five digs.

Despite the result, the Herd received a great ovation from the Herd fans.
