Marshall finished the regular season 11-2-3 overall and 5-1-2 in conference play. The Herd's only league loss came in the regular season finale at No. 19 FIU on Friday. The Panthers earned the top-overall seed.
Marshall played both of its two possible semifinal opponents on the road this season with a 3-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Oct. 9, and a 2-1, overtime victory at Charlotte on Oct. 23.
The Herd has won the last two Conference USA titles beginning with the regular season and tournament championships in 2019. Marshall earned a 1-0 overtime victory against Charlotte in Norfolk, Va., as then junior Pedro Dolabella headed in the golden goal in the 103rd minute. The win gave the Herd its first ever C-USA Tournament Championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Marshall then won the 2020 C-USA Championship, played in the spring of 2021 due to COVID, by defeating Charlotte again, 2-0. This time the match was played at Hoops Family Field as the regular season finale as the league decided not to host a men's soccer tournament due to the pandemic. Marshall had the top spot in the conference standings and Charlotte was second. The Herd then went on an incredible run through the NCAA Tournament on the way to winning the National Championship.
Marshall has been in the C-USA Tournament every year since head coach Chris Grassie arrived before the 2017 season. Before the Herd became back-to-back champions, Marshall won its first round matchups in 2017 and 2018 to advance to the semifinals. Both times the Herd lost to the eventual champions in Old Dominion in 2017 and Kentucky in 2018.
Since Marshall joined Conference USA in 2005, the Herd has played in the tournament championship match three times. Marshall's first trip to the finals came as the No. 2 seed in 2009, falling to top-seeded Tulsa 3-0. The Herd advanced to the finals again in 2015 as the No. 7 seed, first defeating No. 2 Charlotte in penalty kicks in the first round and then taking down No. 3 South Carolina in the semifinals. Marshall eventually fell to No. 5 FIU in the title game, 1-0.
