Women’s Basketball Welcomes LA Tech to Begin C-USA Play

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team is back in action and back home as the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters come to town to begin Conference USA action. Tipoff in the Cam Henderson Center is set for Thursday at 6 p.m.
 
The Thundering Herd enters the game with a record of 5-4. Louisiana Tech is 8-3.

Last Meeting: March 10, 2021 in Frisco, Texas – Lady Techsters won 50-48 in the first round of the C-USA Tournament.
 
Marshall ended non-conference play with back-to-back wins. The most recent was a 79-58 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic on Dec. 20. The Herd's next game against the Akron Zips was canceled due to COVID issues within the Zips program. Marshall had two non-conference games canceled with the other against Wright State, back on Nov. 30 as the Raiders also had COVID problems.
 
The Herd began the game against Oakland a little sluggish on the offensive side but soon took off toward the end of the second quarter, and then kept on rolling through the end of the game. Marshall trailed by as much as eight with a little over three minutes remaining before the half. Sophomore Savannah Wheeler led an offensive charge scoring nine of the Herd's next 11 points to end the half and bring the deficit down to one, 38-37. Marshall then outscored Oakland 21-6 in the third to take a commanding lead.
 
Wheeler had a career night with 40 points on 14-of-18 shooting, and just 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. She drew seven fouls and was 10-of-12 from the line. Wheeler also led the Herd with five assists and four steals, and was named C-USA Played of the Week.
 
Graduate student Kennedi Colclough caused problems for the Golden Grizzlies defense, hustling all over the court, and scored 14 points. Junior Lorelei Roper led on the glass with a season-high 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards, and scored eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.
 
Wheeler leads the team and the league in scoring with 20.1 points per game. She has over 900 points in career (907) and needs just 93 more to reach 1,000. The Catlettsburg, Ky., native also ranks 19th in the NCAA in scoring average.
 
Colclough is averaging 14.6 points per game. Both Colclough (82.1) and Wheeler (86.2) are hitting over 80-percent from the free throw line. Wheeler ranks first in C-USA and Colclough is third. Roper's rebounding average has been on the rise over the last four games, grabbing at least seven boards in each contest. She is averaging 7.0 per game this season and also has at least one block in the last eight contests.
 
Senior Aaliyah Dunham leads the way with 40 assists (4.4 per game) and she leads the league in assist to turnover ratio at 2.50. Dunham is second in C-USA and 39th in the NCAA in steals per game with 2.67 and 24 thefts overall.
 
Following the Herd's game against the Lady Techsters, Marshall welcomes the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to the Cam on Saturday, Jan. 1, with tipoff at 1 p.m. Southern Miss begins league play at WKU on Thursday.
 
The Opponent
Louisiana Tech begins Conference USA play with an 8-3 record and ended non-conference action with a 74-57 win at McNeese State on Dec. 22. The Lady Techsters had a three-game winning streak end on Dec. 19 on the road at Louisiana, 69-57.
 
Freshman Mackenzie Wurm was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday after scoring 12 points, grabbing 12 boards and recording three blocks in just 15 minutes of action in the win over McNeese State. She went 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
 
Louisiana Tech's defense has been very effective to begin the year. The Lady Techsters rank third in the league and 41st in the NCAA in scoring defense allowing just 55.4 points per game. The squad is also third in the conference and 56th in the nation in steals per game at 10.3. Along with getting thefts, Louisiana Tech has been efficient at forcing turnovers at just over 20 per game, while committing 15.5 per contest.
 
Keiunna Walker leads the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game. Anna Larr Roberson is putting up 12.6 points per game, while averaging 9.6 rebounds per contest and has 15 blocks. Salma Bates leads the squad in assists at 3.5 per game. Walker and Bates both average 2.0 steals per contest. Walker has put up double-digit points in all 11 games this seasons with a high of 26 against Jarvis Christian and again versus Sam Houston State. She has grabbed at least one steal in every game except for the win over McNeese. She tallied eight assists against Mississippi Valley State.
 
Roberson has had four double-doubles including 20 points and 14 boards against Louisiana Monroe.
 
Head coach Brooke Stoehr is in her sixth season at the helm in Ruston. She has 88 wins at Louisiana Tech and 159 in her collegiate coaching career.
 
Following the Lady Techsters game at Marshall, Louisiana Tech heads west to take on WKU on Saturday.
