Series History: 2 all-time meetings – Marshall leads 2-0
Last Meeting: Nov. 19, 2019 in Huntington – Marshall won 60-47.

Marshall has had a little break in between games, due to the Wright State Raiders needing to cancel its contest in Huntington that was scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 30, from Covid complications within the Raiders' team. The Herd was last on the floor on Sunday, Nov. 28, at (RV) Michigan State. The Herd held strong against the Spartans, who were receiving votes in both polls. Marshall led from the second quarter into the third and kept things close throughout the game, before finally falling by 10 points, 85-75.

After struggling to shoot from three-point range in the previous two games, the Herd hit nine threes finishing just under 40-percent for the game. Sophomore Savannah Wheeler led the way with 30 points and was 4-of-8 from distance. Wheeler also shot 50-percent from the floor (9-of-18) and finished 8-of-9 from the line. It was her second career 30-point game, the first by a Conference USA player this season, and scored her 800th career point with a three in the second quarter.

Graduate Kennedi Colclough had a great game as well in the Breslin Center with her second-consecutive game scoring 19 points. Colclough was 8-of-12 from the field. Senior Brianah Ferby also scored in double-digits with 10 and had two clutch three-pointers.

This season, Wheeler leads the Herd in scoring at 17.8 per game. She is hitting 89.5-percent of her free throw opportunities and her career 85.1-percent is tops all-time in team history. Colclough is second on the team in scoring with 15.2 per contest. Freshman CC Mays is averaging 10 points per game and leads the team on the glass with 5.8 boards per contest.

Junior Lorelei Roper is second on the Herd with 5.4 rebounds per game and leads with six blocks. Senior Aaliyah Dunham leads the way in assists with 24, 4.8 per game, and has 21 steals. Dunham leads Conference USA and is third in the NCAA in steals per game with 4.20. She has had at least one steal in all five games and five or more three times. Dunham and Ferby, Marshall's two senior transfers, are both averaging 8.2 points per game.

Following the game against Coppin State, the Herd has five remaining non-conference games. Marshall first heads north to St. Bonaventure (Dec. 12) before returning to the Cam against Alderson Broaddus (Dec. 15). The Herd then travels west to the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic against Oakland (Dec. 20) and Akron (Dec. 21) in the South Point Arena.

The Opponent
Coppin State is off to a 3-3 start with wins over La Salle (73-70), William & Mary (73-56) and a dominant 68-38 victory over Saint Francis (PA). However, this season when the Eagles lose a game it has not been close. Coppin State fell by 29 at Rhode Island (74-45), 53 at Virginia Tech (85-32) and then 31 at East Carolina (75-44). The Eagles have only been at home twice this year in the wins over William & Mary and Saint Francis.

Coppin State is in its second season under head coach Laura Harper, who was a legend in her playing days at Maryland and has also been around some top coaches on her way to finally earning her first collegiate head coaching job. She was previously the head coach at Montverde Academy in Florida, helping several players earn Division I scholarships.

Jaia Alexander, a graduate transfer from Butler who also played at Clemson, leads the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game. She put up 30 points in the season-opener and had 23 in the loss to Rhode Island. She has not been in double-figures since as she has struggled with her shooting over the last three games. Alexander also leads the Eagles in rebounds with 6.3 per game. Colleen Bucknor, a transfer from UCF, is next with 5.8 per contest.

In the win over Saint Francis, Jewel Watkins led the way with 16 points and added seven boards. Mossi Staples had 14 points, three assists and two steals. Alexandria Hamilton (11) and Aliyah Lawson (10) also scored in double-figures. Alexander scored just two points, but was active on defense with eight rebounds, all defensive, and four steals. Coppin State forced 26 turnovers, while only committing eight, and held the Red Flash to just 25-percent from the floor (13-of-52), and 3-of-16 from three-point range.

Coppin State will play at Pittsburgh (Dec. 7), Saint Peter's (Dec. 11) and Georgetown (Dec. 13) before finally returning to its home arena on Dec. 16 against Winthrop.
