HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team fell to the Coppin State Eagles, 77-69, Saturday in the Cam Henderson Center. Graduate student Kennedi Colclough put up a season-high 23 points in the loss.

The Thundering Herd drops to 3-3, and the Eagles improve to 4-3.

"You have to give a lot of credit to Coppin State," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "We had chances to put them away and we couldn't do it. I thought they made really big shots in the fourth quarter. Some of that is problems with our defense and some of that is just them hitting better and bigger shots than us. They came in here and got it done and we just didn't. Obviously we have some things that we need to grow and getter better at and I think we should have a hungry team to do that."

Colclough scored her first 20-point game in a Marshall uniform, going 6-of-12 from the floor and hit a career-best 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Colclough finished two points away from tying her career-high of 25 against Trinity Baptist, while playing for Stetson in 2019. She added six boards, three assists and one block.

Sophomore Savannah Wheeler scored 18 points and senior Brianah Ferby put up 12. Ferby also led the Herd in rebounds with nine. Senior Aaliyah Dunham led with six assists and added five points. Sophomore Alexis Johnson scored four points and grabbed three rebounds. Redshirt freshman Aarionna Redman had three points while juniors Lorelei Roper and Kia Sivils had two points each. Roper and Sivils both contributed one block apiece, and Roper added a season-high eight boards. Freshman CC Mays had five rebounds.

Saturday was the first time this season that Marshall was outscored in the paint as Coppin State scored 30 to the Herd's 24.

The game featured four ties and seven lead changes.

Throughout the first quarter, the game was close as Marshall's biggest lead was five, 12-7, off a layup by Ferby on a fast break. Coppin State put together a 6-0 run to take a 1-point lead before Ferby hit a three with 1:36 left in the period to put the Herd back on top. Marshall led by three, 17-14, at the end of the first. Wheeler (eight), Ferby (five) and Colclough (four) accounted for all the Herd's points.

Marshall scored first to begin the second quarter on a three from Ferby, following an offensive rebound from Mays. The Herd built up to a nine-point lead at the 7:22 mark on Colclough's lone made three of the afternoon. Just under 90 seconds later, Colclough hit two free throws to give Marshall a double-digit lead (11) at 29-18. The Eagles kept battling; however the Herd maintained the lead and went in at the half up five, 40-35. Colclough scored seven points in the second and Ferby had six. Colclough, Wheeler and Ferby all finished the first half with 11 points apiece.

The Herd opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to go up 12 before the Eagles called a timeout. Throughout the third quarter, Marshall was able to maintain the lead. Coppin State got within five, 58-53, with 1:28 to play in the period. Johnson scored a jumper with 49 seconds left to put the lead back to seven, and that is where the third quarter finished with the Herd up 60-53.

The fourth quarter belonged to Coppin State as Marshall's offense struggled from the field. The Eagles shot nearly 67-percent on the way to the comeback win.

The Herd has a short break as it is finals week at Marshall University. The Herd hits the road up to St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Dec. 12, before returning to the Cam to face Alderson Broaddus on Dec. 15. Marshall's final non-conference games will be at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, Dec. 20-21, against Oakland and Akron.
