Men’s Soccer to Host West Virginia Tech at Hoops Family Field

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Following a flurry of bad weather and schedule changes, the Marshall men's soccer team is back action against the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Marshall is 0-0-1. WVU Tech is 7-1 as it was able to compete during the fall, with two more matches remaining in the spring. The contest with Marshall will count as an exhibition for the Golden Bears, but will be regular season for the Herd.

Last Meeting: September 2, 1986 – Marshall won 2-1 in overtime in Montgomery, W.Va. The two teams have met in exhibition play in recent years.
Last Time Out: 1-1 draw vs. Ohio Valley
After waiting 440 days to finally take the pitch, Marshall played to a 1-1 draw with the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots. OVU scored first in the 72nd minute with a header in the far end of the goal from a corner kick. The Herd finally knocked in the equalizer in the 87th minute as sophomore Gabriel Alves scored his first career goal on a header just in front of the keeper off a corner kick from junior Jan-Erik Leinhos, his fourth career assist. The teams battled through a physical match as the squads combined for 36 fouls and nine yellow cards.
Six players saw their first action with Marshall in the match. Along with Alves the other five were junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle, junior centerback Nathan Dossantos, freshman forward Kain Reed, sophomore midfielder Jacob Adams, and freshman midfielder Louis Instrall. Semmle recorded one save and allowed one goal while playing all 110 minutes. Dossantos also played the entire contest along with returners junior Vitor Dias and senior Jamil Roberts.
Schedule Changes
Due to the inclement weather that almost felt as if it was never going to stop, the Herd's schedule has undergone several changes. Along with the contest against West Virginia Tech being moved around, the next two matches for Marshall are: Feb. 23 at 3:30 p.m., versus East Tennessee State and Feb. 27 at 3 p.m., against Bowling Green. Both contests will be played at Hoops Family Field. The match against Lipscomb has been moved to March 31 and will remain a home match.
The Opponent
West Virginia Tech rolled through its fall competition with seven wins in eight matches, including a 15-0 conference victory over Carlow University (Pa.). The lone loss came at Asbury University, 1-0, in overtime. Head coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher has been winning since he took over the Golden Bears in 2018. He is 38-4-6 over the past three years and won the 2019 River States Conference Championship Title, earning a trip to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. WVU Tech fell in the first round to Madonna University (Mich.), 2-1. The Golden Bears finished the 2019 season with a record of 17-1-2 and a perfect 9-0 in conference.
Through its eight contests, WVU Tech has outscored its opponents 35-10. The Golden Bears have outshot the opposition 157-98 including 85-55 shots on goal. Luis Alejandro Jaimes leads the team with seven goals and 16 points. Pablo Muniz Rocandio has five goals, five assists and 15 points. West Virginia Tech has used three players in net this season with Jacques D'Monte taking most of the minutes at 405. Guillermo Crespo has logged just under 288 minutes in goal with Lucas Rivera playing 45 minutes. D'Monte has allowed six goals and tallied 18 saves. He sports a 1.33 goals against average and a .750 save percentage. Crespo has allowed four goals, has 12 saves, a 1.25 goals against average and also a .750 save percentage.
The final two regular season matches for the Golden Bears are against Indiana University East (March 27) and Ohio Christian University (April 1), both at home.
