Marshall Tennis Captures First Win of The Season

MURPHREESBORO, Tenn. – The Marshall women's tennis team captured its first win of the season over Middle Tennessee. The Herd (1-1) defeated the Blue Raiders 4-3 in a tight match on Saturday.

"It was a good battle," head coach John Mercer said. "Those are the ones we like to play. We have plenty to work on but that's a good thing."

Middle Tennessee (1-4) started off strong with Muskan Gupta and Love-Star Alexis defeating Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych, 6-4. The Herd responded with duo Liz Stefancic and Jutte Van Hansewyck and pair Madi Ballow and Madison Riley defeating their opponents giving Marshall the point.

Middle Tennessee's own Noelle Mauro defeated Stefancic to tie it up, 1-1.

Riley gave the Herd back the lead after sweeping her opponent, 6-2, 7-6. She is 2-0 in singles so far this season.

The Blue Raiders tied the match 2-2 after a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 Ballow defeat.

The Herd secured the win after Van Hansewyck and Smith both beat their opponents in three set battles.
