Volleyball Travels to Old Dominion to Wrap up Regular Season

First serve on Sunday and Monday set for 1 p.m.
NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall volleyball team is on the road for the final matches of the 2021 spring regular season. The Herd plays against the Old Dominion Monarchs on Sunday and Monday, March 21-22, at 1 p.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the weekend at 8-4 overall and 6-4 in Conference USA. The Monarchs come in at 7-6 and 4-4 in conference action. Marshall sits in third place in the C-USA East Division standings, thanks to its back-to-back sweeps of Florida Atlantic this past week. Old Dominion is in fourth place, and still has to play WKU, March 28-29.

Marshall rolled out back-to-back sweeps over the Florida Atlantic Owls, March 14-15, in the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd had all-around great performances and was honored with three Conference USA Player of the Week awards. Redshirt senior Ciara Debell was named Offensive Player of the Week after totaling 27 kills, an average of 4.50 per set, hit .329 and had 19 digs. Debell also tallied her 1,000th kill in her Marshall career in the first set of Monday's match. She is now up to 1,098 in her collegiate career.
Junior libero Sarah Schank was named Defensive Player of the Week after an outstanding performance with 31 total digs and an average of 5.17 per set. Schank was also a perfect 18-for-18 in receptions. Senior Sydney Lostumo was named Setter of the Week after compiling 70 total assists, averaging 11.67 per set. Lostumo was excellent at the serve with six aces in the Monday meeting, including four in the third set.
Debell leads the Herd with 153 kills this season, an average of 3.33 per set, and is second in digs with 149. Junior Macy McElhaney continues to have a great first season with Marshall, tallying 124 kills good for second on the team. McElhaney is also second on the team with 42 total blocks. Senior Destiny Leon is tied for third in kills with 76 and leads at the net with 51 total blocks, an average of 1.24 per set.
Lostumo is up to 464 assists this season and has 936 in her two-year, Herd career. Lostumo leads the team with 21 aces and has also added 34 kills, 85 digs and 20 total blocks. Schank leads Marshall with 231 digs and an average of 5.02 per set, which also leads the conference.
The Opponent
The Old Dominion Monarchs are in there first season as a program. After winning three-straight, including two wins over Florida Atlantic, the Monarchs dropped two contests to Charlotte, both sweeps. Alessia Sgherza leads the team in kills with 175, an average of 3.43 per set, and is second in digs with 102. Hailey Duncan is next with 101. Teresa Atilano has been the main setter for ODU and has 438 assists and has 23 aces. Jordan Daniel leads the team in digs with 142.
