First weekly honor for Mocyunas

DALLAS – The 8th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team pulled in another weekly award as redshirt junior defender Collin Mocyunas was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the first weekly honor for Mocyunas.

The Thundering Herd has pulled in back-to-back Defensive honors as junior Nathan Dossantos was honored on March 16.

"Very happy for Collin," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "He did a great job last week against a very big physical forward. He is a fine representation for our entire team's defensive performances over the past few weeks."

The Morgantown, W.Va., native played all 90 minutes in the Herd's shutout on the road against No. 11 Kentucky. Mocyunas was a major key to defensive success in the victory. The redshirt junior was tasked with defending the reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week in Eythor Bjorgolfsson. Mocyunas was up to the task as Bjorgolfsson was shut out and did not even take a shot. In the match, Marshall outshot Kentucky 13-9 and 3-2 on goal, thanks to the efforts of Mocyunas and his teammates on the back line.

Throughout the season, Mocyunas has been a major factor to the Herd's defense. Marshall has four shutouts this season, and now three-straight after the 1-0 victory in Lexington, Ky. Mocyunas has started seven contests this season and has logged 651 minutes, playing every minute of five matches including the last four.

This season, the Herd has outshot the opposition 147-43 and 65-13 on goal. During the last three matches, all shutouts in league play, Marshall has fired 56 total shots compared to just 21 for its opponents. Shots on goal over the same span is 21-5, in favor of the Herd.

Next up, Mocyunas will be back in his hometown as the 8th-ranked Thundering Herd travel to Morgantown, W.Va., for a non-conference match with the WVU Mountaineers on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
