Redshirt senior honored in back-to-back weeks
DALLAS – Marshall volleyball redshirt senior Ciara Debell was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Debell has now been honored in back-to-back weeks.
Â
"This is an awesome recognition for Ciara and the efforts of our team this past weekend," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "Ciara has shown us once again what I've known all along, that she's a leader and an elite volleyball player. She continues to learn and grow, and has patience with herself to be her own best each day and strive to get one percent better in one area of her game.
Â
"I'm excited for her, to have earned this award for yet another week."
Â
The reigning league Offensive Player of the Week (March 16), had another great weekend as the Herd closed out the 2021 spring regular season at Old Dominion. Debell's performance helped lead Marshall to two more wins, and a guaranteed spot in the Conference USA Tournament.
Â
In the Herd's first ever meetings with Old Dominion, Debell totaled 36 kills, an average of 4.50 per set, and hit at a .346 clip. The all-around athlete added 18 digs, five total blocks, one assist and one ace. Debell also had just one reception error in 59 attempts, good for a .983 percentage.
Â
In the first match on Sunday, Debell recorded a season-high 23 kills in the comeback victory. Marshall trailed 2-1 after the third set, and Debell put the team on her back. In the second set, she tallied six kills while helping to push momentum back for Marshall. Debell had three kills during a 6-0 run that put Marshall in the lead. She was also a perfect 35-for-35 on receptions as the Monarchs continued to go after her on the serve. It was her 12th match of the season with 10 or more kills. She added 14 digs, her 11th match with 10 or more, and her eighth double-double of the season.
Â
On Monday, the Ocala, Fla., native again led the Herd on offense with 13 kills and hit .458 while leading Marshall to the sweep to close out the regular season on a high note.
Â
The Herd is off until the Conference USA Tournament, April 1-3, in Hattiesburg, Miss.
