Huntington, W.Va. – The Marshall University women's soccer (2-5, 0-4 C-USA) team fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs (4-4-1, 3-2 C-USA) 3-0 on Thursday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.

"It was a tough result," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the loss. "I thought our players battled. We came up against a great ODU team with a great coaching staff, with experienced players who have been in these situations before. I can't fault what we did with limited numbers, but we have to take our chances when we get those opportunities, especially in the second half to get back into the game."

The Herd celebrated Senior Day during the pregame ceremony honoring Canaan Booton, Abi Dropik, Laura Farrelly and Metztli Gonzalez.

"They've been great," Swan commented about the senior class during his first year at Marshall. "A year ago we're looking at the year and we're getting excited about what's happening in the fall, then COVID hits. They just go with the flow with the coaching change a year ago. I can't thank them enough for what they did when things were a bit tricky last spring with COVID coming in, heading home, getting the group united and then the start of this semester it was a bit rough in my personal life. The character our seniors have they rallied around me and kept me moving forward through the toughest situation I've had in my life. I can't thank Metztli, Abi, Laura and Canaan enough for what they've done."

The Monarchs struck first in the 10th minute when Ece Turkoglu from the left side of the box.

Freshman forward Abi Hugh fired a shot for the Herd, but it went wide left of the goal in the 19th minute.

Six minutes later Herd committed a foul in the box. ODU's Amanda Nhek took the penalty and put it past MU goalkeeper Courtney McVicker in the left corner as Marshall trailed 2-0.

Sophomore forward Morgan White fired a shot wide in the 26th minute and an attempt by Hugh in the 43rd was blocked going into halftime.

In the second half, Gonzalez fired a shot wide right in the 62nd minute and another high in the 67th minute.

Old Dominion tallied its third goal of the game eight minutes later off a corner as Riley Kennett put in the back of the night.

Gonzalez fired her third shot of the half in the 85th minute, but it was saved by ODU goalkeeper Kasey Perry as the Herd fell 3-0.
