HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University women's soccer (3-5) team tallied seven goals by three different players, including a hat trick from freshman Abi Hugh, as it defeated the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears, 7-1, Sunday evening at Hoops Family Field.
"We got to use all of our players tonight," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the win. "Some of them had some great moments and it was good to see."
Hugh put the Herd on top with the first shot of the game at the 7:29 mark as she blazed down the left wing and put it past Jenna Miller for the goal.
Just over 10 minutes later, Hugh netted a brace in the 18th minute to put MU up 2-0 on her sixth goal of the season.
After freshman Olivia Gandee nearly netted the third goal of the contest on an attempt off the crossbar in the 35th minute, senior Canaan Booton took a cross from sophomore Iselin Noevik to net the first goal of her career and make it a 3-0 contest.
Then in the 43rd minute, a Golden Bear clearance went awry as WVU Tech put the ball in its own net to put the Herd up 4-0.
Freshman Regan Meyer, who made her first collegiate start in the contest, making five saves in the first half, including an attempt in the 44th minute, to keep it 4-0 Marshall going into the break.
Booton fired a shot on target in the 50th minute, but the attempt was saved by Miller.
The Golden Bears got on the board at the 61:03 mark as Yasmin Del Valle took advantage of a misplay by the Herd in its defensive end to make it 4-1. However, two minutes and 53 seconds later Booton tallied her second goal of the contest to give MU a four-goal advantage, 5-1.
Noevik nearly scored in the 71st minute, but Hugh was there to put home her third of the game a few seconds after the save for her first career hat trick to make it 6-1. It was Hugh's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Gandee and Noevik each had another shot on target in the 77th and 87th minutes, respectively, but both were saved.
54 ticks of the clock later, freshman Sophie Aya-ay netted the first goal of her career in her Marshall debut to make it 7-1 Herd.
