HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall University men's basketball team defeated the Charlotte 49ers, 75-67, on Friday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall improved to 14-6 (8-5 C-USA) while the 49ers fell to 9-14 (5-10 C-USA).
"Tomorrow is senior day," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said about senior day tomorrow. "Three seniors were here, Jannson (Williams) Darius (George) and Jarrod (West), during the season where we made the tournament so it's a big night for them. I wish we were able to fill it up, they deserve that."
Junior guard Taevion Kinsey led the Herd with 19 points, on an 8-for-18 night from the field, and nine rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore guard Andrew Taylor followed behind with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. The Corbin, Ky., native made 7-of-12 from the field and went 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Redshirt senior forward Jannson Williams finished with 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and five blocks.
Charlotte started the first half on a 9-2 run. Marshall answered with a 17-3 streak, capped off by a David Early three pointer, to go up 19-12 with 11:11 left in the opening period.
The 49ers pulled within one, 19-18, a little over minute later, but a 17-5 Herd run in the final five minutes of the half gave MU a 16-point advantage, 47-31, at the break.
Taylor started the second half with a 5-0 streak with a jumper and a shot from beyond the arc to give the Green and White its largest lead of the game at 21 points, 52-31. CLT would go on a 13-2 run to cut the Herd lead to 10, 54-44, with just under 15 minutes remaining.
Marshall extended its lead back to 19, 69-50, with 5:50 left on the clock.
The 49ers scored 17 of the last 23 points in the game, but MU hung on for the 73-65 victory.
