Herd defender also honored on March 16

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's soccer junior defender Nathan Dossantos was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced on Tuesday. Dossantos was previously honored on March 16.

"Nate is very deserving of this recognition," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Our entire team has defended extremely well this season, and Nate has been at the forefront of the quality. Very happy to see him rewarded for his play as he's certainly one of the best defenders in the conference."

Dossantos has been a leader and a key piece of the Thundering Herd's defense. The 9th-ranked Herd has seven shutouts this season and has even held three teams to zero shots on goal. Dossantos has been a major reason for the defensive success as he has stepped right in after transferring in the spring of 2020 from Duquesne.

This past week, Dossantos helped shut down the UAB Blazers on the road as Marshall won 1-0. The Oakville, Ontario, Canada native's work at center back held UAB to just six total shots and none on goal. The victory in Birmingham also marked back-to-back matches that Marshall has held its opponent to no shots on goal.

Along with shutting down the Blazers attack, Dossantos assisted on the game-winning goal in the 38th minute. The junior sent a long pass downfield that found senior Jamil Roberts for the finish.

As well as producing seven shutouts out of Marshall's eight victories this spring, the Herd's defense has helped produce the 11th-best goal differential in the NCAA of 16, (22-6). Dossantos has helped lead the stifling defense that through 12 matches has allowed just 62 total shots and only 17 on goal.

Dossantos earned his first weekly award after clamping down on the FIU Panthers and scoring the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute.

Marshall is 8-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in Conference USA play. The Herd is set to battle for the 2020 C-USA Championship at Hoops Family Field on Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m., against No. 12 Charlotte. The 49ers are 5-0-0 in league play and have a match versus FIU on Wednesday before making the trip to Huntington.
