MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall softball team got off to a good start on the road with a 3-1 win over the FIU Panthers on Friday, in game one of the four-game series. The teams meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
The Thundering Herd improved to 16-8 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA. The Panthers are now 11-19 and 3-6 in C-USA action. The Saturday doubleheader will be streamed on CUSAtv as well as broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM and online at www.marshall.edu/wmul with Scott Hall.
"I was really pleased with how Cailey (Joyce) threw today," Herd head coach Megan Smith Lyon said. "She did a great job out there and we had a really solid day defensively making some great plays behind her. Offensively we didn't have our best start but they battled. I thought that Katie (Adams), Mya (Stevenson) and Saige (Pye) were really clutch today."
FIU got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the second inning. However, redshirt sophomore Cailey Joyce bounced back with a strikeout looking to end the frame.
Marshall tied the game with one run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, junior Mya Stevenson smacked a double down the left field line and then was followed by a walk to senior Armani Brown. Fellow senior Katie Adams came through with a single to center that scored Stevenson from second.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth. Senior Saige Pye led off the inning with a big blast out to left field. It was her fourth home run of the year and 38th of the season for the Herd. Following the homer, Stevenson hit her second double of the contest. It was Stevenson's first game with two doubles since March 16, 2019 at Charlotte. Adams then delivered her second hit of the game with a single to left that moved Stevenson to third. One pitch later, a wild pitch to the backstop allowed Stevenson to score. Marshall led 3-1.
Joyce and the Marshall defense that kept the momentum going retiring the Panthers in order in the sixth and seventh to close out the game. Joyce earned her fourth win of the year going the distance, striking out two while allowing just three hits and only one walk.
Stevenson and Adams both tallied two hits. Graduate Sierra Huerta had one hit in the seventh. Senior Aly Harrell reached on an error in the first and a hit-by-pitch in the seventh, the 32nd time that Harrell has been plunked in her career, fifth all-time in team history. Brown drew two walks, her fourth career game with two and the first of the season.
