Redshirt senior scored career-best in final round of collegiate career

TEXARKANA, Ark. – Marshall men's golf redshirt senior Will Straub had a career-day in the third round of the Conference USA Championships on Wednesday at the Texarkana Country Club. Straub led the Herd with a 4-under 68 as Marshall continued to improve to end the season.
The Thundering Herd ended the third round with a team score of 3-under 285, a season-best. Despite Marshall finishing in 13th place, the Herd improved throughout the event dropping its team score by 13 strokes from the first to the second round, and another 10 strokes lower from the second to the third round.
"Today was a great day," Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. "They guys played great! Tyler (Jones) had an awesome week and finished off a great season. It was great to see Will, Cameron (Root) and Matt (Hoffman) play well down here to finish their careers. They have had a great five years here at Marshall and we will miss them. Will finished his career by holing his last shot for eagle to shoot his lowest career round."
Straub began the round with a birdie on No. 10 as the Marshall's golfers started on the back nine. The Charlotte, N.C., native totaled four birdies, one eagle and just two bogeys shooting par or better on 16 holes. Straub scored a birdie on No. 8 and then an eagle on No. 9, his last two holes of the day and of his collegiate career. The redshirt senior was competing in his 25th career event for the Green & White. His three-round score of 225 was his lowest of the 2021 spring season.
Sophomore Tyler Jones played his way into the top 15, tied for 13th, with a 2-under 70 on Wednesday. Jones recorded eight birdies in the third round with five on the front nine to finish the day. He shot par or better on 14 holes. Sophomore Christian Boyd scored three birdies on the front nine to finish with a 1-over 73, his lowest round of the week. Redshirt seniors Matt Hoffman and Cameron Root both scored a 2-over 74 on Wednesday, the lowest score of the week for Hoffman and the second-best of the event for Root.
Hoffman finishes his career playing in 19 tournaments during his time at Marshall, was named Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week leading into the Championships and is a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Root played in 28 events during his Herd career and is also a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The top four teams after the first three rounds in Middle Tennessee, North Texas, No. 38 UAB and No. 33 Charlotte move on to match play beginning late Wednesday afternoon due to inclement weather expected in the area on Thursday. The winner of match play will be the 2021 Conference USA Champion.
