Series History: First ever meeting

Marshall continued its program-record breaking journey on Monday with a 1-0 win over the defending National Champions, No. 8 Georgetown Hoyas. It was the Herd's ninth shutout of the season. Senior Jamil Roberts scored the lone goal in the 70th minute, tapping in a deflection off a pass from junior Vitor Dias. Junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle finished with two saves including one with less than a minute left on the clock.

The Hoyas outshot Marshall 7-3, just the second time this season that an opponent had more shots than the Herd, but only managed two on goal. All three of Marshall's shots were on target as Roberts had two and sophomore Max Schneider had one. The Herd's defense stood up to the challenge as Georgetown pressed in the final 20 minutes that also featured several Hoya substitutions to keep sending fresh legs at the goal.

Roberts scored his third goal of the season and 17th of his career. Dias tallied his fifth assist of the year to tie Roberts for the team lead.

This season, Marshall has outscored its opponents 28-8, outshot the competition 254-99 and 111-28 on goal. Twelve different players have scored at least one goal this year with six players totaling two or more. Dias leads the Herd with six, followed by junior Jan-Erik Leinhos and redshirt sophomore Milo Yosef with four. Roberts and junior Vinicius Fernandes have three goals each.

The back line of junior Nathan Dossantos and redshirt junior Collin Mocyunas as the center backs, along with Leinhos and freshman Gabriel Alves on the outside have been spectacular in front of Semmle. Three times this season, Semmle did not face a shot on goal. However, the junior goalkeeper has also been a great find for Marshall this year as the JUCO transfer has played over 1,471 minutes in net. He has allowed only seven goals, sports a 0.43 goals against average, has 20 saves and a .741 save percentage. Semmle has nine shutouts this year, good for second-most in a season in program history.

The Opponent
The North Carolina Tar Heels finished the regular season with a 7-2-3 record in ACC matches, ending the year with a 1-0 victory over Duke on April 11. The Tar Heels have delivered 10 clean sheets this season. UNC played six matches in the fall between Oct. 2 and Nov. 6, before getting back in action in February.

The Tar Heels have outscored its opponents 20-10 and outshot the competition 173-117 and 66-43 on goal. Thirteen different players have scored a goal this season, but only two have tallied more than one. Giovanni Montesdeoca leads the team with five and Santiago Herrera has four. Milo Garvanian leads in assists with four.

Alec Smir has been the only player in goal this year for UNC, playing 1,632 minutes. He has allowed 10 goals, has a 0.55 goals against average, 31 saves and a .756 save percentage.

Head coach Carlos Somoano is in his 10th year leading the UNC program. He has now guided the Tar Heels to the NCAA Tournament nine times and has over 130 wins. He won the National Championship in 2011 when North Carolina ended the year with a 21-2-3 record.

UNC has won two National Championships with the first in 2001 and again in 2011. The Tar Heels were the runner-up in 2008, falling 1-0 to Maryland.
