CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Marshall softball team dropped the regular season finale, 6-3, against the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday. Next up for the Herd is the Conference USA Tournament, hosted by WKU in Bowling Green, Ky., May 12-15.
The Thundering Herd finishes the regular season at 19-12 and 8-8 in C-USA play. The 49ers improve to 30-17 and 14-6 in league action and won the East Division. Marshall is the No. 7 seed in the tournament and will play No. 6 seed Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, May 12 at 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. CT. Charlotte will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament as North Texas captured the regular season title at 18-2 in league play, and UAB finished 15-5 to earn the No. 2 seed.
Marshall struggled in its final game of the series. The Herd managed just three base runners through five innings, and all on free passes as senior Saige Pye was hit by a pitch in the first, junior Mya Stevenson drew a walk in the first, and then freshman Paige Halliwill got plunked in the fifth.
Marshall did not record its first hit until Pye hit a 2-run home run to center in the sixth. Harrell led off the inning with a walk, the 131st in her career and 17th-straight game reaching base safely. Junior Chloe Lee came in to run for Harrell, but was able to jog home on the blast from Pye. Two batters later, with two outs, graduate Sierra Huerta kept the inning moving with a single and then took second on a wild pitch. Junior Rachel Pennington came in to run at second for Huerta, and was able to use her speed on a bloop single from junior Grace Chelemen, and scored to cut the deficit to three, 6-3.
The Herd defense made some great plays in the fourth through the sixth innings to keep the 49ers from adding to the lead. However, Marshall went down in order in the top of the seventh.
Freshman Brianna McCown had the start in the circle and pitched 2.2 innings allowing four hits, five runs and struck out three. Senior Megan Stauffer came on in relief in the bottom of the third and pitched the rest of the way. Stauffer allowed four hits, one unearned run and had one strikeout in 3.1 innings. She also recorded two assists and one putout off a liner back to the circle.
Pye increased her hitting streak to 11-straight games, a career-high. Huerta, Chelemen and Halliwill all had a hit in the loss.
