Volleyball Honored for Academic Excellence

Earned USMC/AVCA Academic Award for 2020-21
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team was honored for its excellence in the classroom, earning The United States Marine Corp (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 season, the organization announced.

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale. A record 243 Division I programs earned the distinction.

"Even though teams might not have played during their usual season or may not have competed at all during the past year, coaches still found ways to lead their players to academic excellence." said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "This is a testament to the important role volleyball coaches play in their players' success both on and off the court."

Under head coach Ari Aganus, Marshall has maintained a level of excellence off the court as well as on. In her two years at the helm, the Herd is 28-15 on the court with players being named all-conference, all-region and picking up specialty awards. In the classroom, players have been named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll 20 total times and three earned the Academic Medals for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better.

By the end of the spring 2021 semester, nine of the Herd's 13 players were named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll with Olivia Fogo and Riley Winslow earning the Academic Medal. Junior Sarah Schank, who was named the C-USA Libero of the Year, also garnered recognition on the C-USA All-Academic Team.

The Marshall volleyball team swings back into action for the 2021 season, Aug. 27-28, in the Cam Henderson Center for the Marshall Invitational where the Herd will take on Alabama, Austin Peay and Miami (Ohio).
