Herd returns to standard six meet slate

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall cross country coaching staff announced the team's 2021 schedule Thursday.

After a truncated 2020 campaign, the program will return to its standard four meet regular season, followed by the Conference USA Cross Country Championships and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals with the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

"We are extremely excited about this fall's meet schedule," coach Caleb Bowen said. "A lot of factors go into creating a meet schedule but ultimately what we want are meets that are going to develop the athletes to be able to perform their best at the conference and regional meets late in the fall.

"I believe the meets we have chosen are going to provide fantastic competition which will sharpen us to run our best when it counts. Also, I love how regionally accessible these meets are. We have the best fans in the world and these meets provide an opportunity for many to come and cheer on our runners. It's going to be a fun season!"

The season begins Wednesday, September 1 at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia. The team returns two weeks later to Virginia for the University of Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville on Friday, September 17.

On Saturday, October 2, the Thundering Herd returns to the 20th annual Live in Lou Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, one of the largest meets in the country. The program competed at the meet in 2020 with Jacob Birurakis and Kyleigh Edwards pacing the men's and women's programs, respectively.

The regular season concludes Friday, October 15 at the VertCross Invitational in Kernersville, North Carolina hosted by High Point University. Marshall last competed at the meet in 2018.

The Conference USA Cross Country Championships, set for Saturday, October 30, are hosted by Charlotte for the first time since 2016. Beginning with those championships in 2016, Marshall cross country has placed at least one member on the All-C-USA team each year since.

The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals are hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, set for Friday, November 12. The meet serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships, held in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, November 20. The program seeks a qualifier for the first time since Matt Schiffbauer in 2011.
