Volleyball Falls in Season-Opener to Alabama

Herd to play Austin Peay and Miami (OH) on Saturday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team lost its 2021 season-opener to the Alabama Crimson Tide in four sets (27-25, 23-25, 21-25, 19-25) Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center. The Thundering Herd plays two more matches in the Marshall Invitational against Austin Peay (12:30 p.m.) and Miami (OH) (6 p.m.) on Saturday.
 
Marshall begins the year 0-1. Alabama is now 2-0 after defeating Austin Peay in four sets earlier on Friday.
 
Senior Macy McElhaney led the Herd on offense with 16 kills and added two blocks. Graduate Ciara Debell tallied 14 kills and 14 digs for her 28th career double-double. Junior Lydia Montague had 10 kills, four service aces and two blocks in her Marshall debut. Junior Megan Taylor and sophomore Anna Calcagno had two kills each. Calcagno added 12 digs as well.
 
Graduate Destiny Leon led Marshall at the net with nine total blocks, increasing her consecutive matches with a block streak to 43. She added five kills. Graduate Sydney Lostumo tallied 37 assists, her 17th career match with 30 or more. Lostumo added 14 digs for her fourth career double-double and had two blocks. Senior libero Sarah Schank recorded 25 digs, her ninth career match with 20 or more, and had seven assists.
 
Marshall began the first set in a hole trailing 4-0 and 6-1. The Herd began to gradually get the offense going, however Alabama held a six-point lead at 10-4. From there, Marshall showed great fight and eventually brought the deficit to one, 15-14, going on a 3-0 run with blocks from Leon and Taylor, and then kills from McElhaney and Montague. The Crimson Tide took the momentum back quickly getting the lead back to six at 21-15. Alabama got to set-point with the score 24-20. The Herd then came roaring back, scoring five-straight to take a 25-24 lead after a kill from Debell. The Tide tied the set back at 25-25 before the Herd scored two-straight, a kill from Debell and a block-assist by Calcagno and Leon, to take the first set 27-25. Leon had four blocks in the first period.
 
In the second set, it was Marshall's turn to jump out to the early lead and then Alabama begin to creep back in. The set was tied for the first time at 9-9 and then was a back-and-forth affair throughout the remainder. The second frame featured 12 ties and three lead changes. The score was tied for the last time at 23-23, before Alabama scored the last two points to even the match at 1-1.
 
The third set began as another back-and-forth battle with six ties and one lead change. The Tide took control of the set at 12-11 and held the lead the rest of the way. Alabama won 25-21 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
The Tide took the lead from the first point of the fourth set and did not relinquish for the rest of the match. Marshall closed the gap to one at 16-15 off an Alabama error. The Tide still stayed out front and took the match 3-1. Attempting to keep her team in the contest, Schank recorded 11 of her 25 digs in the fourth set, including four during one rally.
