HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – In front of a Hoops Family Field record crowd of 3,033, the 6th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against the 4th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday night.

The old attendance record at Hoops Family Field was 2,126 back on Nov. 24, 2019 when Marshall defeated WVU 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Thundering Herd is now 3-1-2 while the Mountaineers move to 4-0-2.

"We created a lot of chances in the second half and in the overtime especially," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Even in the first half I think that we were just to open in transition. (WVU) did a really good job counterattacking and hitting the space. They scored and then we got one right back but it was kind of casual for us. The second half was fantastic. I thought it was great to see Collin (Mocyunas), Jan-Erik (Leinhos), Nate (Dossantos) on the back and then (Adam) Lubell and Gabriel (Alves) on the left did a great job in the second half and in the overtimes.

"We kept our composure and that is all we can really ask of the guys in those situations. We created the chances to win the game and we created them four times near the end of the game. We just have to finish one and in the future we will finish one. It will go in, like the final in Cary (National Championship match) we finished that one chance we had and tonight we didn't. That is the small margin in tight games. And credit to Strats (WVU head coach Dan Stratford), they were very well organized and came with a game plan and stuck to it."

The atmosphere at Hoops Family Field was lively from start to finish with the record crowd in attendance. And it made an impact on the Herd.

"The biggest part that we take away today was that Herd Nation came out tonight," junior midfielder Max Schneider said. "We are thankful for everyone that came out and supported us. It definitely helped us in coming back after every goal we conceded."

"(The crowd) was absolutely terrific," coach Grassie said. "I'm so happy that everyone came out to support us and it makes a big difference. It is such a phenomenal environment. It's loud. It's intimate, everybody is right there and close enough to reach out and touch players at times. It just makes it such an intimidating atmosphere. It's going to be our 12th man and hopefully we can create enough of a good time and they had enough of a good time tonight to be able to come back on Tuesday and then next Saturday against Kentucky."

The match was a physical battle on the pitch from the first whistle to the final horn. The teams put on a display for the crowd with great plays all over the pitch.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring with a goal in the 17th minute. Less than two minutes later, fifth-year senior Pedro Dolabella found the back of the net off a corner kick from senior Vitor Dias. It was Dolabella's third goal of the season and 16th of his career. Dias netted his team-leading fourth assist of the year.

WVU managed another goal off some great ball movement in the 42nd minute to take a 2-1 lead just before the half. In the first half, Marshall outshot WVU 6-3 and even 4-2 on goal. However, the Mountaineers had the lead after the first 45 minutes.

In the second half the physicality continued as both top 10 teams kept on battling. In the 60th minute, a foul was called against WVU that set up Marshall for a free kick from about 25 yards away. Schneider sent in a blast that found the far low corner to beat the diving keeper and tie the match at 2-2. It was Schneider's first goal of the season and fifth of his career.

The Herd had a few more chances as time wore down, but just could convert. The last one coming with just 57 seconds left as Schneider fired a bicycle kick from the far side that went just wide left.

In the first overtime period, Marshall again had some opportunities right away. Freshman Paulo Lino had an attempt saved by the keeper in the 92nd minute, and senior Nathan Dossantos had a header off a corner kick that went just over the crossbar in the 94th minute. The Mountaineers did not attempt a shot in the first overtime.

In the second overtime, Marshall had the first two shot attempts before WVU finally attempted a shot that was saved by senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle in the 104th minute. Semmle made another save in the 107th minute to help keep the match rolling. Less than one minute later, a straight red card was issued to WVU's Luke McCormick and the Mountaineers played the final two minutes and 37 seconds a man down.

Marshall outshot WVU in the contest 15-9 and 6-5 on goal. Steven Tekesky had four saves for the Mountaineers and Semmle had three for the Herd. There were a total of 35 fouls called as well as four yellow cards, with each team receiving two, and the one red card.

The Herd stays home for its next three contests as Marshall now prepares to face No.7 Akron on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
