BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Marshall volleyball senior libero Sarah Schank became the 14th member of the Herd's 1,000 Digs Club, unfortunately coming in a three-set loss (8-25, 15-25, 19-25) at No. 22 WKU on Saturday. Schank reached the milestone in the third set.
The Thundering Herd drops to 4-11 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA action. The Hilltoppers improve to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Schank came into the Saturday meeting needing just nine digs to reach the milestone and finished with 10. The magic number came in the third set during a long, back-and-forth rally with the Hilltoppers that resulted in a Marshall point. Schank began her quest for 1,000 digs with 216 as a freshman in 2018 and then 212 in 2019, and both of those seasons she played as an outside hitter. She finished second on the team in kills in 2019 with 235. The Naperville, Ill., native moved to libero for the 2020 season, that was pushed to the spring of 2021 due to COVID, after the graduation of Amber Weber (2017-19) who finished seventh all-time in team history with 1,272 digs. Schank put up a team record 40 digs in her first collegiate match as the libero and has not looked back.
By the end of the 2020-21 season, Schank tallied a then career-high 274 digs and her average of 4.81 per set was good for third all-time in Marshall history. She was also named the C-USA Libero of the Year. So far in the 2021 season, Schank is up to 299 digs, is averaging 4.82 per set, and is among the nation's leaders in total digs. She currently ranks 14th all-time in program history with 1,001. Schank needs another 185 digs to reach the top 10 list.
"Sarah Schank has been the backbone of this program for a long time," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "She's relentless, hardworking, and holds herself to the highest standard. I'm so proud of this milestone for her career and so proud to be part of her journey her at Marshall."
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Fogo and fifth-year senior Destiny Leon led the Herd on offense with six kills each. Junior Lydia Montague had five kills and graduate Ciara Debell had four. Junior Essence Clerkley and freshman Brynn Brown had two kills each.
Leon tallied three total blocks in the match and kept her streak going at 57-straight contests with a block. Montague and Clerkley had two blocks each. Fifth-year senior Sydney Lostumo finished with 12 assists and Brown had eight. Debell tallied nine digs and has over 900 in her collegiate career (908) with 839 in her Herd career and 69 at Florida Gulf Coast. She was also 12-for-12 on receptions. Senior Macy McElhaney was 8-for-8 on receptions and had one block and one kill. Junior Meagan Camden and sophomore Riley Winslow finished with two digs apiece.
After struggling offensively in the first set, Marshall improved in the second with a team hitting percentage of .310. The Herd again continued to improve as the match wore on and were able to keep the score a little closer in the third set, but just could not quite finish.
After a month on the road, Marshall finally returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1-2, as the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders come to town. The Herd has 10 matches remaining in the regular season, all in Conference USA. Following the matches with the Blue Raiders the rest of the Herd's schedule is at Florida Atlantic (Oct. 8-9), home versus Old Dominion (Oct. 15-16), at Charlotte (Oct. 22-23) and then home against FIU (Nov. 5-6) for Senior Weekend.
