HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (1-1) split a pair of duals on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, falling to the No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers, 7-0, and sweeping the Longwood Lancers, 4-0.

"It was a good trip to get a lot of matches in and start the season," Marshall tennis head coach John Mercer said after the pair of matches.

In doubles against the Lancers, Emma Vanderheyden/Liz Stefancic picked up a convincing 6-2 victory over Maria Saez/Nina Hederich. Madi Ballow/Aisling McGrane sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 triumph against the pairing of Emma Nurgazieva/Karina Rizvanova. Jutte Van Hansewyck/Gabrielle Clairotte were tied 3-3 on court three as their match went unfinished.

Van Hansewyck picked up the first win in singles over Longwood on court six as she dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Alexandra Hincu.

Clairotte carried the momentum on court five with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Hederich. Stefancic then clinched the sweep for Marshall taking down Saez on court two 6-3, 6-2.

Vanderheyden, Ballow and McGrane were all leading in their respective matches when the Herd sealed the win.
