Graduate Senior forward scored three goals for Thundering Herd last week
NEW ORLEANS – Marshall graduate senior midfielder Kat Gonzalez has been named the Sun Belt Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Gonzalez scored three goals in a crucial week for the Herd women's soccer program and their postseason hopes.
Trailing 2-0 late in a match in which Marshall needed a result, Gonzalez was called upon to take a penalty kick. Gonzalez calmly converted the PK, allowing Marshall to get within a goal and eventually tie the match late for a 2-2 draw.
On Sunday, Gonzalez and the Herd faced Texas State, needing another result to make the Sun Belt tournament. The Blakeslee, Pennsylvania native set the tempo for the match, scoring from 25 yards out in the 6th minute to give her team the lead. Gonzalez would score again in the 61st minute, striking another ball from outside the box, past the Texas State keeper to seal what would become a crucial 4-1 win for Marshall.
Gonzalez has five goals this season with three assists. The senior forward is second in the conference in shots (57) and shots per game (3.56). Head coach Michael Swan understands the work and value that Kat Gonzalez brings to the team.
What a fantastic week for Kat," Swan said. "She got us back into the game at Coastal Carolina by taking the penalty kick. Then scoring two of the best goals of the season against Texas State. But it's not just the goals, it's how she has performed with the ball, without the ball, both attacking and defending. She's been a leader these last couple of weeks, we can't wait to see her do the same at the conference tournament."
Gonzalez and the Herd women's soccer team face ODU on Thursday, October 27 for the final regular season contest of the season.
