HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University Athletics and The Brandr Group (TBG) have established a group licensing agreement for the university's student-athletes covering all The Thundering Herd's 18 varsity sports. This partnership creates new opportunities for Marshall student-athletes to profit off their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) using the school's official trademarks and logos.
"Our partnership with The Brandr Group is a monumental step in allowing our student-athletes to maximize their name, image, and likeness," Marshall University Director of Athletics Christian Spears said. "It allows our student-athletes to develop their brands, our community to support their favorite teams and student-athletes and strengthens the international brand of Marshall University. We are excited to welcome TBG to Marshall Athletics."
The partnership with TBG allows for the collective use of student-athletes' NIL in licensing and marketing programs, co-branded with Marshall's logos and marks. Student-athletes will have the option to voluntarily join a group licensing program. Participation in the program will not limit any student-athlete's NIL rights in their individual licensing and marketing activities. Potential licensees interested in learning more should contact Jim Neish at TBG.
TBG, a brand management, marketing and licensing agency, will manage and administer the program as well as create licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes. With decades of collective management experience for some of the world's largest brands, TBG also manages group rights programs for the NFL, NBA and MLB players associations in the college space.
Products that combine team logos and player names and numbers have accounted for a large portion of licensed sports merchandise sales at the professional level for decades, and this program provides collegiate student-athletes with the same opportunities.
"Opportunities for student-athletes to financially benefit from their NIL are now available across the college sports landscape, and this group licensing agreement with Marshall empowers its student-athletes to capitalize on this new environment," Rick Perko, Vice President of Program Development at TBG, said. "Thundering Herd student-athletes now have the option to monetize their NIL through co-branded opportunities available across Marshall's merchandising and sponsorship portfolio. The passionate Thundering Herd fanbase will also benefit with new ways to celebrate their favorite players."
Fans can expect to be able to purchase official Marshall merchandise, including team jerseys with the name and number of The Thundering Herd players who have joined the respective group licensing program, once TBG enters into agreements with applicable school trademark licensees.
With the addition of Brandr, The Herd Exchange and the Thunder Trust, Marshall University is building a comprehensive NIL program for its student-athletes.
