Roshala Scott and Abby Beeman lead Herd with 23 points apiece
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A furious rally from the Marshall women's basketball team fell just short against a strong Duquesne (5-1) side Sunday afternoon from the Cam Henderson Center. The visiting Dukes edged Marshall 77-72.
Junior guards Abby Beeman and Roshala Scott each scored 23 to pace the Herd.
The Dukes, led by Megan McConnell's 12 point, nine rebound, eight assist effort took an early 10-4 lead on Marshall. The Herd cut the deficit to 12-10 following freshman Sydni Scott's consecutive threes. However, a 7-0 run from the visitors saw Duquesne lead 19-10 after one.
A more efficient Marshall offense trimmed the deficit in the second, with freshman Peyton Ilderton's three to springboard the MU attack. The Herd shot over 50 percent from the floor after the first quarter. Six consecutive points from Beeman brought Coach Kemper's side to within 13 at the half.
With Marshall trailing by 15 entering the fourth, the comeback was on. A pair of Beeman threes, with sophomore Terah Harness and freshman Meredith Maier also hitting from deep cut a 21 point deficit to seven in just over three minutes of game action. Marshall made five triples in the final 10 minutes, and shot 57 percent for the quarter.
Defensively, Marshall held the Dukes to 4-13 shooting in the final quarter. The Herd forced four turnovers in the final frame. A Roshala Scott three pointer got Marshall to as close as four, but Duquesne were able to hold on for a 77-72 road win.
The loss drops Marshall to 3-3 on the young season.
