Herd finish with 27 assists in 104-43 victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall Thundering Herd improved to 4-3 with a 104-43 win over Davis and Elkins Sunday at the Cam Henderson Center. Sophomore Terah Harness led MU with 25 points.
The visiting Senators opened the game score for score with the Herd early. With the game level at nine at the opening media timeout of the first half, Marshall turned up the defensive pressure. Freshman guard Sydni Scott acknowledged the intensity that the MU defense picked up after the first break in action.
"Coach (Tony Kemper) was just trying to make us control them on defense," Sydni Scott said. "They were just doing drives to the lane early, but I think that once we stopped them on the ball, everything in our defense came first and then offense came pretty easy."
The freshman from Prospect Park, Pa. finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Sydni was one of three double digit scorers, with Harness and Roshala Scott, who finished with 19.
Following the aforementioned media timeout in the first quarter, the Herd outscored D&E 16-3 to close out the first. A three from Sydni opened the scoring in the second, as the Herd never looked back. Successive jumpers from Kendall Miller, Mahogany Matthews, and Roshala Scott pushed the MU lead to over 20 points. Five points from Aarionna Redman to close the half gave the Herd a 50-21 advantage.
Marshall forced 14 Davis and Elkins turnovers and held the Senators to just 27 percent shooting for the game. In the third, the visitors were held to just seven points. Freshman Meredith Maier limited the D&E opportunities, with five of her team-high nine rebounds coming in the third. The Fairmont native finished with six points. Additionally in the third, Shanniah Wright converted on a pair of free throws as the graduate senior surpassed 300 points for her career. Coach Kemper's side led 80-28 after three.
The Herd distributed the ball well throughout the contest, with a season-high 27 assists. Junior Abby Beeman led with 12 assists, putting her just outside the top four in Marshall women's basketball history (13).
Marshall came away with the 61 point victory before a big stretch of games to close out the non-conference schedule.
"We've got four games going into Christmas now that are huge games, with three of four at home, and it starts with Wright State on Friday," Head Coach Tony Kemper said. We'll take a night like tonight going into it, but we need to be hungry and humble about what is ahead."

Marshall will host Wright State at the Henderson Center to cap off finals week on Friday, December 9. The Herd and Raiders have never met in women's basketball, following a cancelation of last season's scheduled game in Huntington.
