HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (7-1) extended its win streak to seven in an 83-69 wire-to-wire victory over the Ohio Bobcats (4-4) on Saturday in the Cam Henderson Center.
MU has trailed for only 3:38 of the 280 minutes played during the last seven games and has trailed for just 16:29 during the first 320 minutes of action this season.
"Ohio's a very physical team. I think our speed kept them from being that physical because you can't hit what you can't catch," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win.
Marshall had five student-athletes tally at least 10 points in the contest, led by 19 from redshirt senior Andrew Taylor. The native of Corbin, Kentucky, added four rebounds and three assists to his stat line.
Fifth-year senior Taevion Kinsey fell a rebound short of a double-double as he recorded 18 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds and five assists in the victory.
Going 8-for-16 from the field in the game, junior Obinna Anochili-Killen recorded 16 points as junior Kamdyn Curfman followed with 11 and freshman Jacob Conner added 10.
The Herd scored 15 of the first 20 points in the contest, including a 9-0 run from 13:04 to the 11:23 mark with Taylor scoring the final six points. Marshall followed with a 14-2 advantage to extend its lead to 20 points, 29-9, after Conner made a layup with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
After the two sides traded baskets down the stretch, freshman Micah Handlogten closed the opening 20 minutes with a lay-in at the buzzer to put the home side up 43-22 at the break. The 21-point advantage was it largest of the half.
Marshall and Ohio traded runs for the majority of the second half, but a three-point make by redshirt freshman Wyatt Fricks at the 4:02 mark gave the Herd its largest lead of the contest at 26 points, 81-55.
The Bobcats closed the game on a 14-2 run, but MU hung on for the double-digit victory.
Notes
All seven of the wins during the winning streak have been by at least 11 points. It's also the longest win streak for the Herd since it won seven in a row from the end of the 2019-20 season in the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign.
Marshall turned the ball over a season-low six times.
The Herd outrebounded the Bobcats 44-40. It was the sixth time this season the Herd has won rebounding battle, winning all six contests.
Kinsey and Taylor have registered 10 or more points in all eight contests this season.
