PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (8-1) extends its win streak to eight games in an 82-71 road victory over the Duquesne Dukes (7-2) on Thursday night.
The victory snapped Duquesne's six-game win streak. The loss marked the first time this season the Dukes have lost at home.
"Hats off to our guys," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the victory. "They had a run come against them – I think (Duquesne) got it down to four or five – but we pulled it right back out, got it up to 11 or 12 and finished with an (11)-point win."
Fifth-year senior Taevion Kinsey tallied a game-high 19 points to go with a game-high seven assists in the victory. The Columbus, Ohio, native added seven boards to his stat line as he made nine of his 19 shots from the field.
Redshirt senior Andrew Taylor followed with 18 points and six assists in the contest. Junior Kamdyn Curfman added 14 points, including a 4-for-6 performance from 3-point range.
Five student-athletes finished in double-figures with redshirt freshman Wyatt Fricks scoring 12 points and junior Obinna Anochili-Killen tallying 11. Freshman Micah Handlogten grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to go with eight points.
After a Taylor steal on the opening possession and a missed three, Handlogten tipped in the board for the opening points of the game. The Dukes answered with a 7-2 run to take a lead on a Jimmy Clark make at the 17:11 mark. A Dae Dae Grant three gave Duquesne it largest lead of the contest, 10-6, about four minutes into the contest.
Marshall held a 30-27 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half, but followed with the game's biggest swing. Marshall closed out the opening 20 minutes on a 16-0 run, including six points from Kinsey, to take a 46-27 lead at the break.
A layup by Taylor 11 seconds into the second half gave the Herd a 21-point lead - its largest of the contest, but the Dukes rallied to close the gap. Duquesne's Tevin Brewer knocked down a 3-pointer to cut Marshall's lead to 63-59 with 5:00 remaining.
With the game in the balance, MU steadied the ship as Curfman knocked down a 3-pointer off a Taylor assist at the 3:25 mark to go back up by double-digits, 70-60.
"Down the stretch, if you leave me open, I'm going to make a three. That's what happened," Curfman said about his clutch make.
The Dukes pulled within seven during the final three minutes, but the Herd held on for the double-digit victory.
Notes
Marshall's eight-game win streak is the longest for the program since it started the 1999-00 season on a 10-game streak during assistant coach Cornelius Jackson's junior season. The Herd has only trailed for 6:43 of the 320 minutes during the eight-game win streak. All eight victories have come by at least 11 points.
With nine makes from the field, Kinsey now has 814 for his career as he passed John Taft's 811 for second most in program history. He also reached the 2,100-point plateau in the contest as he now has 2,118 during his career.
Tonight was the fourth contest of the season the Herd had five student-athletes score 10 or more points.
