MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A stellar defensive effort in the first half powered the Marshall University men's basketball team (9-1) to a 69-60 win at Robert Morris (4-7) to complete a Keystone State road trip sweep on Saturday night. The victory extended the Herd's win streak to nine games.
"It wasn't a pretty game," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the game. "Obviously, pretty always comes with good offense and we had way too many turnovers."
With a game-high 26 points, fifth-year senior year Taevion Kinsey paced Marshall with his sixth 20-point game of the season. The Columbus, Ohio, native also dished out a game-high five assists and went 10-for-14 from the field with makes on 10 of his final 13 shots.
Redshirt senior Andrew Taylor contributed 15 points, while junior Kamdyn Curfman tallied 10 and grabbed seven boards. Freshman Micah Handlogten brought down a game-high 13 rebounds.
"I'm pretty impressed with our defense," D'Antoni commented about his team's defensive effort. "Our defense was really good."
MU's defense held RMU to just 14 points on 20 percent shooting (6-for-30) in the first half. On the offensive end, the Herd closed out the final 9:06 of opening 20 minutes of action by scoring 15 of the half's final 20 points.
"It's hard to stop us when we are moving the ball and getting up and down," Kinsey, who opened the second half with six straight points, said.
The run continued into the second as an 9-2 advantage, capped off by a three-point bucket by Jacob Conner, gave the Herd its largest lead of the game at 21 points, 39-18, with 16 minutes left in the contest.
Marshall made 51.7 percent of its shots (15-for-29) in the second half.
Notes
Marshall's nine-game win streak is the longest for the program since it started the 1999-00 season on a 10-game streak during assistant coach Cornelius Jackson's junior season. The Herd has only trailed for 9:11 of the 360 minutes during the nine-game streak. All nine victories have come by nine or more points.
Handlogten's double-figure rebound effort marked his sixth such game this season.
Kinsey and Taylor have now tallied 10 or more points in all 10 of the Herd's contests this season.
The Herd outscored the Colonials 22-8 on fast break points.
