HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's basketball team travels north from Mobile, Alabama to Boone, North Carolina to close out 2022 with a New Year's Eve contest at App State.

GAME NOTES

  • Abby Beeman notched her first double-double as a member of the Herd against South Alabama. The junior from Ridgeley, West Virginia had 10 double-doubles as a Shepherd Ram from 2019-22. Beeman's 20 points were the second time she has crossed the 20 point threshold this year, with 12 the rebounds being a new career-high.
  • Kendall Miller hit the 500 point milestone in Marshall's win over South Alabama. The Akron, Ohio native is also eight assists away from 200 for her career.
  • Roshala Scott's game-winner with 2.6 seconds gave Marshall the thrilling overtime victory. The last time the Herd won a game in OT was January 22, 2022, in a 57-44 win over Florida Atlantic. 
  • Marshall's scoring defense remains second-best in the league and 33rd overall despite playing an additional five minutes Thursday. The 55.8 points per game average is slightly behind Texas State's 55.7.
  • The Thundering Herd opened its Sun Belt Conference era with a win. Marshall's C-USA era in women's basketball also opened with a 65-52 road win at Memphis on January 6, 2006.

ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS

App State won its Sun Belt opener over Old Dominion on Thursday, defeating the Monarchs, 81-55. The Mountaineers are 5-7 overall, having faced one common opponent with the Herd in Norfolk State, losing 70-65 on November 17. 

The Mountaineers were picked eighth in the Sun Belt preseason poll. 

Junior guard Faith Alston was named to the Sun Belt Preseason All-Third Team. Alston leads the team with 2.4 assists per game. Senior guard Janay Sanders leads the team with 14.3 points per game.Sanders was picked to the Sun Belt Preseason All-Second Team.

SERIES HISTORY

Marshall and App State have met on 44 previous occasions as former Southern Conference foes, with App State leading the all-time series, 25-19.
