Herd Tennis Heads to Dayton

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (4-2) heads to Dayton, Ohio, to take on the Flyers Saturday.

The Herd swept a pair of home duals last weekend taking down EMU, 6-1, and defeating Murray State, 4-3.

Against the Eagles, the Herd took the point from doubles with Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefanic winning on court one, 6-2, coupled with Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte finishing the set point, 6-1, on court three. Madi Ballow and Sophia Hurrion were leading on court two, 5-2, but did not finish.

Stefanic started the Herd on the front foot in singles by winning the first singles point on court two, 6-0, 6-2. Ballow took the next point, 6-4, 6-3, on court three with Vanderheyden completing the victory after dropping the first set, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. McGrane and Clairotte rounded out the set wins for the Thundering Herd.

Then on Saturday against the Racers, Vanderheyden and Liz were dominant to open the competition in doubles, winning 6-1 on court one. However, Murray State took the point from doubles after winning 6-4 on both courts two and three.

Stefanic carried the momentum into her singles play and defeated Murray State's Sarah Bureau, 6-2, 6-0, for the first point of the day for the Thundering Herd on court two. Vanderheyden followed suit with a win on court one, 6-4, 6-3, to give Marshall a 2-1 advantage overall in the contest.

The Racers tied it at two after Staysa Sharapova won on court four, 7-5, 6-4. Ballow overcame a challenge from Murray State's Natalie Slezapova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to restore the Herd advantage. Marit Kreugel tied it up after winning, 6-3, 6-3, on court five. Clairotte won the decisive point on court six to give Marshall the victory, 6-2, 7-6.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: Dayton
Dayton enters the match 4-3 after winning two matches last weekend against Northern Kentucky and IUPUI. The Flyers took down the Norse 5-2 before taking every point against IUPUI on Saturday. Junior Erica Wojcikiewicz went 4-0 between singles and doubles play in the two contests, earning her Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors.
