Harrell ties Folden for tops all-time in career walks

Game One Box Score (PDF)
Game Two Box Score (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall softball team fell twice to the UAB Blazers in two close contests, 1-0 and 5-2, on Saturday at Mary Bowers Field. Fifth-year senior Aly Harrell drew her 147th career walk in game two, putting her into a tie for first place all-time in program history.

The Thundering Herd drops to 16-8 overall and 0-2 to begin Conference USA play. The Blazers improve to 16-10 and 4-1 in league action. The series finale is set for Sunday with first pitch at 12 p.m. CT/1 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on CUSAtv by UAB and will also be broadcast on 88.1 WMUL-FM with audio streamed online at www.marshall.edu/wmul with Scott Hall on the call.

Game One: UAB 1, Marshall 0
The Herd could not find the timely hit in the game one shutout. It was a pitching and defensive duel throughout until the Blazers finally scored one run in the sixth.

Redshirt junior Sydney Nester pitched the complete game and took the loss, falling to 10-4 for the year. She allowed only two hits and struck out seven. Nester has 151 strikeouts this season and 495 in her career.

Marshall tallied four hits and also drew two walks.

In the bottom of the first, the Herd defense ended the inning with a double play. Senior Mya Stevenson caught a line drive in right field and then fired back to Harrell at first to double up the runner. It was the second double play of Stevenson's career, and the 30th for Harrell putting her into a tie for third all-time in team history with Melanie Stoehr (2008-11).

Fifth-year senior Katie Adams recorded the first hit for Marshall in the second with a single. Sophomore Kay Kay Kenney led off the third inning with her second double of the year, however she was stranded at third by the end of the frame. Stevenson got on board from an infield single in the fourth and stole second for her fifth steal of the season.

In the sixth inning, Harrell recorded her first hit of the game and 191st of her career. That tied her with Alianna Telles (2009-12) for 13th all-time in team history. Marshall loaded the bases in the sixth as fifth-year senior Saige Pye and Adams both drew walks. A ground out to third ended the inning leaving the bases loaded.

The Herd was retired in order in the top of the seventh as UAB hung on for the win. It was the 22nd time out of 42 total meetings between Marshall and UAB with the result being two runs or less and the 12th time of just one run.

Game Two: UAB 5, Marshall 2
The Herd fell behind early but managed to keep it close throughout, and had a chance in the seventh to tie the game before UAB recorded the final out for the doubleheader sweep.

Sophomore Brianna McCown earned her first start of the season and pitched the first three innings, allowing six hits, four runs and two strikeouts. McCown took the loss. Freshman Bub Feringa entered the circle to start the fourth inning and pitched the final three innings allowing five hits and one run.

The Blazers scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead and never looked back. Mya Stevenson got Marshall on the board in the second with a solo home run to left that traveled over the net beyond the outfield fence and into the parking lot. She now leads the team with seven homers this season and it was the 47th of her career.

UAB scored one more run in the bottom of the second to put the lead back to two runs, 3-1. Marshall scored one more to cut the deficit back to one, 3-2, in the top of the third. Freshman Alex Coleman, who made a great juggling catch in foul territory in left in the first inning, led off reaching on an error. Two batters later Aly Harrell tallied her second hit of the game with a single to left moving Coleman to second. Next, freshman Lauren Love flew out to right, but Coleman tagged up and used her speed to beat the throw and slide in safely at third. Saige Pye then scored Coleman with a single to left. It was Pye's 23rd RBI of the season and 100th hit of her career.

The Blazers scored another run in the bottom of the third pushing the lead back to two, 4-2. Another pitching and defensive battle ensued as neither team pushed a run across the plate in the fourth or fifth. In the top of the fifth, Harrell smacked a double to left-center. It was her third hit of the game and 194th of her career, good for 13th all-time and just six hits away from becoming the 12th member of the Marshall 200 Hit Club. The double was also the 43rd of her career, tied for third all-time with Vanessa Clarkson (1999-2002) and Taylor McCord (2015-18).

UAB scored one final run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. Kay Kay Kenney led off the top of the seventh with a hit-by-pitch. Kenney moved to third on a ground out to second by Feringa. Two batters later Harrell drew career walk number 147 to put two runners on, with two away, and the game-tying run coming to the plate. However, the Blazer defense made the play to get out of the inning and preserve the win.

Harrell's walk in the seventh put her into a tie with four-time All-American and Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Rachel Folden (2005-08) for the top spot in program history. Folden set the record playing in 225 games. Harrell tied the mark in career game number 191. Harrell also tallied three of the Herd's five hits and raised her season batting average to .500 and her on base percentage to .626.
